About
The story of Ramco Boats
Ramco Boats is a long-established New Zealand manufacturer of plate aluminium fishing boats, founded in 1985 and based in the Canterbury region. With over three and a half decades on the water, the company has maintained a single-minded focus on building boats as the ultimate hunter–gatherer tools for New Zealand’s demanding marine environments.
History and experience
Established in 1985, Ramco has more than 35 years of continuous boatbuilding experience. Over that time they have become recognised as New Zealand’s leading and largest manufacturer of plate aluminium boats, supplying models from compact 3.6-metre dinghies through to 9-metre offshore-capable vessels. Their heritage is strongly linked to New Zealand’s alloy boat scene; the brand notes that it has been building alloy boats in the country for decades and is producing new models with the same core values that originally made the name well known among local boaties and anglers.
Design and technical expertise
Ramco’s aluminium boat range is designed by leading boat designer Scott Robson. These designs emphasise ride quality, sea-keeping and performance in rough water. Ramco positions its hulls as being among the best performing aluminium boat hulls in rough seas and suitable for all boating conditions around New Zealand.
Alongside the standard boat range, the wider group also undertakes advanced custom design and construction work through its associated Icon Custom Boats operation. This arm is described as a world leader in commercial and search-and-rescue (SAR) craft design and construction, again working closely with Scott Robson. Projects include rescue vessels such as "Kaiapoi Rescue", commercial inter-atoll transport craft, adventure tourism jet boats, and large multi-hull vessels, demonstrating broad engineering and naval architecture capability.
Craftsmanship and build philosophy
Ramco places strong emphasis on hand-crafted construction. Each aluminium boat is individually hand welded, with attention to care and precision aimed at producing strong, safe plate aluminium boats. The company highlights a high attention to detail throughout the build process so that every boat leaving the factory meets a consistent standard of structural integrity and finish quality.
This focus on build quality has been recognised through industry awards. Ramco cites a "host of awards", including the Aluminium Fish Boat Under 6m Award at the 2006 New Zealand Boat Show, as evidence of the performance and reception of its designs.
Product range and capabilities
Ramco manufactures a comprehensive aluminium boat range from 3.6 m to 9 m, targeting fishing and general recreational use. The line-up includes dinghies, cuddy cabins and hardtops, and models suited to inshore, coastal and more offshore fishing. The brand markets these boats as "New Zealand’s Ultimate Fishing Boats", with particular emphasis on their suitability for rough conditions commonly encountered in local waters.
In addition to boats, the company also builds custom aluminium trailers to match any size of Ramco boat. These trailers are designed and fabricated in-house, allowing customers to source an integrated boat-and-trailer package directly from the manufacturer.
Mission, values and positioning
Across its website Ramco presents itself as a New Zealand-made, performance-focused fishing boat specialist. Key themes in its positioning include:
- Reliability and safety – boats built as robust, safe plate aluminium vessels suitable for serious fishing and rough-sea use.
