Overview
About this vessel
A much-loved icon of southeastern Tasmanian waters, Alcheringa is a beautifully crafted Daydream class sloop designed by renowned naval architect Ken Watts. Launched in 1959, she has spent her entire 64-year life as a family cruising yacht, cherished by generations for both day sailing and extended coastal adventures. Elegantly proportioned with a tall rig, flowing canoe stern, and fine sea manners, the Daydream class is a development of Watts' popular Bluebird design. Offshore capable, the original Daydream 28 competed in the inaugural Sydney to Auckland Race before cruising to Fiji!
Alcheringa was built with exceptional craftsmanship by Jack Symons on the shores of Lindisfarne TAS, using premium materials including Bruynzeel plywood, Tasmanian spotted gum, Oregon, and copper fastenings. Her hull features only one scarf joint per side, and her hollow Oregon mast is a testament to thoughtful construction. Lovingly maintained throughout her life, Alcheringa has had only a few careful owners, each contributing to her preservation and legacy. Her current owners, highly regarded local Shipwrights have recently completed an extensive refit, to fully restore the vessel to 'as new' condition. This included a NEW 2020 16HP VETUS DIESEL ENGINE, ENGINE BEDS, SHAFT, AND STERN TUBE, NEW 2020 STANDING RIGGING AND FULL REFURBISHMENT OF THE MAST AND BOOM, NEW CUSHIONS AND UPHOLSTERY THROUGHOUT, NEW 2022 MAINSAIL AND COVER, NEW 2020 STANCHIONS AND LIFE LINES, the list goes on.
Alcheringa is now offered for sale in excellent condition and ready to sail. She comes with original construction drawings, early photographs, historical documents, and a copy of the Seacraft magazine featuring the Daydream class.
This is a rare opportunity to take over the custodianship of a classic Tasmanian yacht - steeped in history, lovingly restored, and ready for her next chapter.
