About this vessel
Designed by Doug Peterson, the Kelly Peterson 44 is renowned for its impressive sailing performance, true Bluewater capability, and exceptional build quality. Widely regarded as one of the classic Bluewater cruising yachts of its era, they continue to be highly sought after. With more than 300 built, many have completed full circumnavigations and explored some of the world's most remote regions in both comfort and safety, with owners frequently praising the design's remarkable sea-keeping abilities in even the most challenging conditions. The solid fibreglass hull, long fin keel, skeg-hung rudder, and protected propeller combine to create a yacht that is both a delight to sail and easily managed shorthanded. "Magnum" is an exception example of the design has has been under the same experienced ownership for the last 26 years. The current owner, only the second owner from new, purchased "Magnum" in America, and has cruised extensively, now completing his voyage in Hobart (the yacht is fully imported into Australia). Over the last 26 years, the owner has left no stone left unturned to ensure the safety and comfort onboard with regular significant upgrades. These include a NEW 2026 STORM BAY SAILS MAINSAIL, MAST REFURBISHED, PAINTED, NEW STANDING RIGGING AND HARKEN FURLERS IN 2020, NEW 2024 HURTH GEARBOX INSTALLED, NEW 2020 PROP SHAFT, MONITOR WIND VANE STEERING ADDED 2021, AND 2018 WIND GENERATOR AND 400W OF SOLAR ADDED. Stepping inside, the traditional teak fitout provides a warm and welcoming ambience. To port is the dinette with seating for 6 in comfort on the neatly upholstered settees. The U-shapped galley is well appointed and idea for preparing meals whilst at sea. Beautifully upgraded with the Corian bench tops, it is complete with a Oven Master 4 burner gas stove with oven, 12V fridge, stainless steel sink with fresh and salt water, under bench washing machine, and extensive storage for long stays onboard. The accommodation is ideal for cruising with friends and family, as well as living onboard. Aft is the generous master cabin with double berth, extensive storage, access to the cockpit, and a full ensuite with toilet and vanity. The second private cabin is forward with a double V-berth, and second full bathroom adjacent. There is also a single settee berth in the saloon ideal as a sea berth when on passage. Being a true Bluewater cruiser the vessel also features a generous chart table complete with HF and VHF Radios, extensive electronics, and comfortable seat.
Outside, the solid spray dodger, hard top bimini, and full set of clears, enclose the cockpit to provide complete protection from the elements. Providing pilothouse like comfort, complete with a full set of cushions, this a great space to keep watch, entertain, or simply relax and enjoy the views in your favourite anchorage. This vessel has been sailed extensively single handed, and is very well equipped for this with the Monitor wind vane steering system, oversized Raymarine autopilot, furling genoa and staysail, and the NEW mainsail in the boom bag with lazy jacks. Coming into the marina is also a breeze with the Side Power Bow Thruster providing additional control. There is excellent access forward around the wide side decks with raised bulwarks providing additional security. Up on the bow is the 12V anchor winch with both the primary and secondary anchors fitted on independent bow rollers for easy deployment. Ready for cruising, the vessel also comes complete with a 2019 Achilles inflatable tender with 2021 Toshiba 9.9HP 4 stroke outboard, excellent power generation from the solar and wind generator, watermaker, plus extensive safety equipment.
This vessel is powered by the upgraded Perkins 84HP diesel engine with NEW 2024 Hurth Gearbox. Having been well maintained, it provides easy and reliable cruising at 6 knots. The upgraded fuel tanks hold a total of 440L providing an excellent motoring range. The engine is also fitted with both the standard Perkins 70amp Alternator plus Balmar 100amp Alternator for fast charging.
