Symbol 44 Sun Deck MK II
Overview
About this vessel
Sea Fever is a 1987 Symbol 44 Sun Deck MK II, and a veteran of America's Great Loop. Symbol was founded in 1982 and established a solid reputation for quality "semi-custom" vessels built in Taiwan, using skilled labor providing quality craftsmanship.
The two staterooms, with en-suite heads with separate showers, as well as the additional dinette and flybridge berths, make Sea Fever the perfect vessel for two cruising couples or a family, for cruising local waters or offshore islands, for long weekends or living-aboard full time. Sea Fever can do it all.
One previous owner, a mechanical engineer, spent many months updating Sea Fever before cruising the Atlantic Coast, the Florida Keys, and the islands of the Bahamas. Sea Fever is outfitted for extended cruising and life at anchor. During a three-month cruise to the islands of the Bahamas, Sea Fever only spent two nights docked at marinas and never needed to purchase water.
An owner reported that she runs very economically on one engine, doing 7.5 knots, while sipping about 4.3 GPH. However, Sea Fever is capable of planing at 19 knots.
As an aft-cabin motor yacht, boarding Sea Fever is via the swim platform from a floating dock, if the dinghy is in the water, and up the ladder, or via either mid-ship side entrance from fixed docks. Steps lead from the aft sundeck up to the bridge or down to the salon. Full sidewalks lead to the foredeck and bow.
The salon features free standing furniture, including a settee to port and two reclining chairs to starboard. The galley is a few steps down, to starboard. The dinette is across from the galley. The en-suite guest stateroom is forward. The en-suite master stateroom is aft, a few steps down from the salon. The engine room is accessed through the stairs both forward and aft, as well as through removable hatches in the salon sole.
The aft deck can be reached via the ladder from the swim platform through the transom door, or from either sidewalk, three steps up. The entire deck is non-skid and carpeted with dark blue indoor/outdoor carpeting. There is a hard top, where the solar panels are mounted. Two LED lights and two stainless steel handrails are on the ceiling.
The roomy aft deck is the perfect place to watch the sunrise with a cup of coffee, or the sunset with your favorite after-five beverage. The Teak deck furniture includes a bench and two adjustable lounge chairs, which were refinished in 2024. The cushions were replaced in 2021. The headroom on the aft deck is 6'6".
The entire sun deck can be enclosed with solid white canvas curtains. One sunshade panel is available and can be used in various locations, as needed.
There is also a storage cabinet with a neutral Corian countertop. The plumbing is available to add an ice maker in that cabinet. A cable hookup as well as an outlet on the inverter is available to add an exterior TV. A Teak flagpole is mounted on the stern.
The solar panel fuse box is located on the aft deck to port, as well as a "simulated" security camera. The aft deck also has two Pyle Hydra stereo speakers.
The swim platform has a fold-down swim ladder (2018) and a hot/cold transom shower. The Weaver davit system is on the swim platform, with a remote controlled winch mounted on the transom. Sea Fever is also outfitted with a tender tow line block, which is very handy while moving about the islands.
A smoked tempered glass door leads from the aft deck down into the salon. Teak and stainless-steel stairs lead up to the flybridge.
The foredeck on Sea Fever is one step up from the sidewalks and has three cabin hatches, but is large enough to accommodate portable chairs, or for stowage of bicycles, kayaks, paddleboards, etc. A Magma BBQ grill is mounted to starboard, with a direct propane line to the two-cylinder propane locker. A large Sea-Line Products deck box is mounted to port. There are also mounted fender racks on each side rail.
The foredeck on Sea Fever also features twin anchor lockers with a raw water wash down system, which are separate from the forward cabin. There is a Maxell Neilson windlass with twin anchor rollers for the primary and secondary anchors. The entire foredeck surface has fresh non-skid paint.
The flybridge on Sea Fever is accessed via four Teak steps from the aft deck and is fully enclosed by a canvas bimini and Strataglass for all weather cruising. The bimini is white topside with a sky-blue bottom, supported by a stainless-steel frame. The Strataglass is in very good condition. The rear window is EZ2CY and the front, side, and aft panels all zipper open. The headroom on the flybridge is 6'8". The non-skid deck has indoor/outdoor carpeting.
The Todd captain's chair seat was replaced in 2021. Guests are invited to get comfortable on the white vinyl bench seats on either side of the flybridge which also feature storage. The "best seat in the house" is the raised aft bench with neutral striped cushions. This owner added a wood step/footrest. There is also a double berth, which is the perfect place to sleep under the stars while at anchor.
There is additional storage under the helm station, with a cabinet door to port. A cabinet to starboard is for the back-up VHF. A mirror, which is handy for docking, is mounted at the helm station, to port. A GFI electrical outlet is on the flybridge; there are also two GFI electrical outlets in the engine room.
The helm gauges are well labeled. The fuel gauges are non-operational, but there are sight-glass gauges on both fuel tanks in the engine room. There is excellent visibility forward and aft from the helm for docking.
Manufacturer provided description, from the original brochure: DESIGN: The fine entry, three-quarter length keel, innovative shape of the running bottom and location of the center of gravity all contribute to the superior performance.
CONSTRUCTION: Hull construction begins with a fully cured gel coat of 15 mil thickness. Hand layup method of construction guarantees the proper fiberglass to resin ratio, assuring consistent laminate strength throughout. Generous overlap of these layers in the keel and chines increases hull strength, impact resistance and overall structural integrity.
The stringer system is reinforced in the engine room and is a network bonded to the solid fiberglass hull bottom. The hull sides have an Airex core above the waterline for additional stiffness. The resulting structure is incredibly strong with minimum weight. Superstructure and deck surfaces are fiberglass, reinforced with ¾" balsa. The deck is firmly secured to the hull by fiberglass adhesive and SS bolts and sealed by a heavy gunwale molding.
