1987 Jongert 78 Motor Yacht for sale in Beaufort, North Carolina
Overview
About this vessel
The all-aluminium 2 Umbrellas was built in 1988 by the famous Dutch shipyard Jongert, well known for building large, classic, capable, world-travelling sailboats and powerboats. She was built as an explorer vessel before the terms explorer and expedition vessel even existed.
Originally built for an American businessman, she was extensively cruised for over 20 years and has crossed the Atlantic 5 times on her own bottom. Every system on the boat is designed and built to be capable and reliable. At 24 metres, she is the perfect pocket cruiser for world or coastal passage making.
The current owners have cruised her up and down the east coast, including through a small craft advisory off Cape Hatteras. They have now purchased a Dutch river cruiser and are cruising the European inland waterways.
4 Umbrellas is a custom, one-of-a-kind transatlantic motoryacht built by Jongert in 1988 for a successful American businessman. She crossed the Atlantic 5 times and cruised much of the world. The current owners have mainly cruised her up and down the east coast and found her an easy vessel to feel safe in, even during challenging conditions. They have now bought a river cruiser in Europe and plan to spend the next three years on their next adventures.
Everything about the ship is well thought out and constructed. The hull was extended at Jongert in 1996 to add fuel capacity and provide a larger, more comfortable aft deck for dining and entertaining, as well as a Euro stern for easy access to the tender and water.
The master stateroom with ensuite head is exceptional. The master bath is huge with Jacuzzi tub, dual sinks and large shower, positioned aft and totally private. The current owners have slept in the master stateroom while running and say they could have been staying in the Four Seasons. The shafts are sealed in oil and then cooled by seawater—a feature normally only found on megayachts, providing complete quiet and no saltwater damage to the shaft.
She is one of the few ships of this size that can be a "dead ship"—anchored with all 110/220V power off, windows, hatches, doors and ports open for ventilation. The massive battery room with nine new batteries and large inverter system allows the SubZero refrigeration/freezer and other systems to maintain proper temperatures for extended periods at anchor.
The boat features full walkaround side decks, teak decks, and exceptional English teak furnishings by Barlow Tyrie on the aft deck. The spacious covered aft deck features built-in exterior seating, a custom teak table, and transom doors leading to the swim platform. The expansive foredeck has built-in seating on the forward cabintop with comfortable backrest and storage.
The salon opens to the aft deck through large sliding doors with separate sliding screen doors. A large starboard built-in couch, seat and coffee table are complemented by substantial port-side storage and a bar area. The galley is complete with SubZero fridge, microwave, cooktop, oven and dishwasher. The large dining area with wrap-around seating easily seats eight people.
The helm area is full beam with port and starboard sliding side doors allowing easy access to the side decks. The flybridge is reached via a stairway from the bridge and features a full helm station, large seating area with cushions, and large storage lockers aft of the seating.
Major refits were completed in 2012, 2014 and 2018. Recent work includes newly cleaned and recoated black and grey tanks, full bottom job down to the fairing, four new exhaust elbows, four new six-inch valves for the main sea chests with gear drives, and a rebuilt aft deck winch. She received a fresh bottom paint job in March 2019.
She is a beautiful ship and one of the most capable and proven 78-foot boats around, always attracting admirers. The engines are Caterpillar work engines—not typical yacht engines—with commercial equipment generators that run at 1200 RPM. Massive stainless fittings throughout the yacht exemplify the quality built into the entire vessel.
