Overview

About this vessel

Background

The Ocean 48 Super Sport has proven one of the most successful yachts in her class, with more than 400 hulls produced between 1986 and 2003. The design evolved from the popular 46 Super Sport, improving upon it with greater interior volume and more contemporary styling. In 1991 the Super Sport received a makeover featuring a more refined house profile, newly designed windows, and a half tower. The 48 Super Sport exemplifies Ocean's philosophy of building efficient, maintainable yachts with an owner/operator mentality—vessels that combined custom-boat aesthetics with practical engineering and the teak appointments favored by serious fishermen and their families alike.

Current Condition & Work in Progress

This vessel has undergone substantial systems work. The entire septic system has been removed and is ready for replacement with modern Raritan or equivalent toilets. The midship containment system, which was leaking, has been removed along with antiquated macerator units. A new midship tank with most fittings is on board awaiting installation. The tank that was under the main stateroom bed has been removed; it may need replacement if additional black water storage is desired. A cutout in the companionway floor will require an access door, as the original installation was in an inaccessible location.

All old through-hull valves have been removed and the hull plugged with expanding foam during hard-stand work; the old valves are stored in a blue tote beneath the boat.

The bridge and helm require updates: the synchronizer control, trim tab control, and GPS/Loran systems are antiquated and need replacement. A new spotlight has been installed; the remote is in the upper compartment.

The port-side 671 TI engine requires service to the turbo and air system; the starboard engine is in good condition. A thorough cleaning of the pressurized air and turbo systems on both engines is recommended. The generator was recently serviced less than 50 hours ago, including venturi cleaning, system flushing, and oil change.

The salon and galley air conditioning has new condenser units but requires a controller; the previous setup used a Nest thermostat with a custom test control box. The raw water intake valve was too small for the two units and experienced barnacle buildup in the screen; upgrading to either two 3/4-inch thru-hulls or one 1-inch scoop is recommended. The original sizing caused high-limit cutouts while cruising, though operation was satisfactory at anchor.

New galley items include a refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, garbage disposal, kitchen faucet, and ambient RGB Bluetooth lighting. A temporary fresh-air air conditioner has been installed for use while on the hard. The trash compactor, central vacuum (with all parts under the steps), washer and dryer, fresh water tank and pump, cockpit sink, and all freshwater spigots are in working order with no leaks.

Most of the railing has been removed due to leaking at deck fixture points; the area is now clean and dry. Original stateroom wall covering was removed due to water staining from the leaks. A new pulpit-area railing is planned. The pulpit anchor motor and simple footswitch pull system are functioning properly.

Cockpit lighting has been upgraded from 110-volt residential flood lamps to 24-volt DC, with a new power supply installed. The outriggers are stored under the boat and require cleaning and re-lining; their future on the vessel is undecided. The spare propeller shaft is in its containment area. Propeller, shaft, hanger bearings, and seals are all in good condition. Fish door hinges require replacement; the door has been removed as a safety precaution. Under-boat lamps are new (2020 vintage) RGB units; the switch is located in the right storage compartment where the main power cord passes through.

The salon features the original carpet in decent condition, a 40-inch television with new speakers and Boss stereo, and offers a three-stateroom, two-head layout.
