Overview

About this vessel

Hoyden is a bespoke, custom-built yacht commissioned in 1991 and designed specifically for her first owner as a true blue-water, liveaboard cruiser. Constructed to the highest standards, she combines strength, comfort, and timeless style, making her an ideal vessel for extended ocean passages or luxurious coastal cruising.

Her robust epoxy GRP hull offers outstanding seaworthiness, while the beautifully finished Teak and Ash interior provides a warm and inviting living space. Entry through the sheltered wheelhouse leads down to a remarkably spacious saloon and galley area, where the large dining table comfortably seats eight guests — perfect for entertaining on board.

Hoyden was designed and built by an experienced yachtsman alongside professional shipwrights, the yacht was carefully constructed to the original design specification and surveyed both pre- and post-launch. With plenty of miles logged across the Mediterranean, North Atlantic, and Caribbean, Hoyden has proven herself to be safe, reliable, and a true pleasure to sail in all conditions. Currently with her second owners she has benefitted from a newly fitted refurbished engine and replacement mast in addition to stainless steel rigging in 2022.

A rare feature for a yacht of this size, Hoyden boasts a walk-in engine room complete with a dedicated tool store and full-size workbench — an engineer 27s dream for easy maintenance and long-term cruising independence.

Powered by a newly fitted Gardner 4LW 65HP diesel engine (2025) renowned for its reliability and efficiency. This robust 4-cylinder engine features fresh water cooling and is paired with a PRM 405 2:1 reduction gearbox, delivering a maximum shaft speed of approximately 800 rpm. Fitted by specialist engineer with install undertaken on site at Conwy Marina - Engine serviced 2025 following install.

The propulsion system is thoughtfully designed, with the shaft flexibly coupled via a Deep Sea seal and cutlass bearing, driving a three-bladed Maxi Prop that exits at the trailing edge of the keel — eliminating the need for a P-bracket and reducing drag.

Onboard heating is well catered for, with multiple systems providing comfort throughout the vessel:

  • Webasto water heater in the owner 27s cabin
  • Webasto air heater (replaced 2023) fitted in saloon with outlets throughout.

Tankage Configuration

Construction

Hull

The white GRP sandwich hull was built to scantlings exceeding Lloyd 27s specifications, providing strength comparable to steel 2D yet without the associated corrosion issues.
The outer layers incorporate three laminations of the SP Epoxy system, giving superior resistance to osmosis and impact.

Below-deck spaces are tanked, with the exception of the engine room and mast chain locker, both of which have independent bilge pump systems.
All bulkheads and furniture modules are fabricated from GRP/ply sandwich panels and fully bonded into the hull, contributing significantly to overall structural rigidity.

Multiple longitudinal stringers run from the bow aft past the keel, ensuring the forward sections can endure heavy seas and pounding without transferring stress to the bulkheads.

Deck

The main deck and wheelhouse are also constructed from GRP sandwich laminate, delivering strength and sound insulation.
All decks are teak-sheathed, providing both practicality and classic yacht appeal.

Keel

Hoyden features a long fin keel with 4.5 tons of external lead ballast and an additional 1.5 tons of internal lead, bolted securely to the floors above the main ballast line. This configuration provides excellent stability and balance under sail.

Rudder

The semi-balanced rudder and skeg assembly are immensely strong. A fabricated steel framework extends from the hull into the skeg, supporting the rudder and ensuring integrity in demanding conditions.
The lower one foot of the rudder blade is a sacrificial moulding, designed to absorb impact and protect the main rudder structure 2D a thoughtful, professional safety feature ideal for ocean cruising.
