Overview

About this vessel

Ed Monk and his son, Ed Monk Jr, both legendary Pacific Northwest naval architects and shipwrights, worked together designing fishing boats, tugs, pleasure powerboats, motoryachts, and some sailing yachts. The Monks designed boats that were built to withstand the rigors of the rough waters between California and Alaska, and long-range fishing trips down the Pacific Coast. Their rugged, durable designs were built by many well-known builders, along with custom boat builders. Ed Monk Jr continued his father's legacy designing recreational and commercial vessels up to 100ft in length, creating a PNW boatbuilding heritage of his own with Tollycraft, Ocean Alexander, McQueen, Nordlund, Christensen, and Westport to name a few, and countless one-off custom builds, such as the 1991 74ft "ELIZABETH RUTH." According to a PNW Boat Delivery Captain, Ed Monk Jr's hull designs, with emphasis on fuel economy, performance, and seakeeping are the "Gold Standard of design." Fishing trawlers especially, were designed and built to go the distance through rough sea conditions and return safely loaded with a catch.

The "ELIZABETH RUTH" semi-displacement steel hull features a bulbous bow, sharp entry, and long centerline keel from bulb to skeg-protected prop and rudder. A spray rail and a single deep chine with fin stabilizer below the waterline, run along both starboard and port sides. The high bow sheerline breaks at the foc'sle and tapers down to the aft deck. High bulwarks protect the side decks and heavy tubular metal safety railings and fold-down swim platform/gate protect the open aft deckhouse area. The large open deck aft of the bridge pilothouse is protected on 3 sides with the same high tubular metal safety railings. This 74ft Monk-designed fishing trawler has been converted to an expedition motor yacht that is capable of long range bluewater cruising in safety and comfort.
