Catalina 42
Overview
About this vessel
The Catalina 42 stands out in the market because it delivers exactly what most sailors actually use: space, simplicity, and reliability.
This design was intentionally built to maximize interior volume while maintaining a hull shape that is efficient and forgiving underway. The result is a boat that feels larger than its length, tracks well, and performs predictably in a wide range of conditions. Owners consistently praise its balance—comfortable enough for long stays aboard, yet capable enough for serious coastal passages.
What makes this model especially compelling is its accessibility. Catalina's philosophy was to deliver "as much boat for the money as possible," and that shows here—not in compromise, but in smart design decisions that prioritize usability over complexity.
Jolly Mon! reflects that philosophy. She is straightforward to operate, easy to maintain, and offers the kind of real-world cruising capability that matters when you're actually out there using the boat—not just admiring it at the dock.
Accommodations
Two-cabin layout with excellent separation and privacy. Both cabins feature custom spring-coil mattresses. The forward stateroom has a Pullman berth and ensuite access to a private dry head forward. The spacious aft cabin features a generous berth and storage.
The galley is efficiently laid out with a Princess 3-burner gimbaled propane stove and oven, 120-volt microwave, and Seafrost cold plate refrigerator with freezer compartments. Custom countertop covers and a hinged, lifting counter panel provide additional usable food prep area and customizable configurations. The galley sink includes both fresh- and saltwater foot pumps to help conserve water when doing dishes.
The aft head features an electric flush freshwater toilet and a second door for private access to and from the VIP cabin. The forward head is manual flush.
The large salon features wraparound seating and a convertible dining table that can become an additional berth by lowering telescoping support poles. A dedicated navigation station with swiveling seat provides a functional workspace. A large workshop cabinet to starboard with a top-loading hinged lid offers practical storage. Air conditioning provides climate control. TV, DVD player, and onboard entertainment are included.
The Catalina 42 is known for its "big-boat" interior feel, achieved through a wide beam and efficient layout that prioritizes livability without sacrificing function.
Mechanical
The Yanmar 4JH2E diesel engine is a reliable, widely-supported propulsion system designed for easy access and serviceability. An 80-amp alternator supports charging.
Jolly Mon! has a companionway stair system that can be unlatched and completely removed, greatly facilitating engine access for regular maintenance and inspection.
Electrical
A Paneltronic AC and DC electrical control panel provides comprehensive power management. Shore power inlet accommodates double 30-amp power cords. A Dometic 16,000 BTU marine air conditioning unit ensures climate control. Three GE 110-watt solar panels mounted to a custom arch support provide renewable charging, supplemented by an Xantrex solar panel system with LinkPRO battery monitor. A stern-mounted Air Breeze wind generator and Magnum Energy charger/inverter complete the power system. The 12V DC system throughout is supported by a 120V hot water heater. LED lighting with color wheel options and red footlights to preserve night vision offshore round out the electrical package. A battery selector switch is mounted in the salon for convenient power management.
Electronics
The electronics suite centers on a Raymarine C80 chartplotter at the helm, with Raymarine 125 GPS, Tridata, ST60 wind vane, and ST6002 autopilot control. Raymarine radar with a 12-mile limit provides additional situational awareness. A Standard Horizon VHF radio with AIS completes the core communications and navigation setup. A stereo system, TV, and DVD player provide onboard entertainment.
Sails and Rigging
The standing rigging was completely replaced in 2013. The keel-stepped aluminum mast carries a masthead sloop sail plan optimized for solo- or short-handed sailing. A Mack Sails mainsail from 2013 with an updated cover from 2020 is fitted with lazy jacks for easy dousing and reefing. A Mack Sails 135 genoa on a roller furler, also from 2013, pairs with the mainsail for a balanced and efficient rig. The foredeck includes a dedicated chain plate for a storm jib.
A Garhauer traveler mounted forward of the companionway ensures maximum cockpit usability. Lewmar 40 self-tailing winches on the cabintop with dedicated clutch banks handle primary sheet loads, while Lewmar 52 primaries manage the genoa sheets. The Catalina 42's rig is intentionally simple and efficient, making it approachable for newer sailors while still rewarding experienced crews.
Hull and Deck
The cockpit features expansive seating, including twin stern rail seats off either quarter. Varnished teak coaming cubbies provide storage for sheets, lines, and winch handles. An Edson steering pedestal features instrument pods, a folding cockpit table, and cup holders. The helm position can be configured for standing or for sitting on a padded, elevated custom helm chair.
A dedicated, gasketed propane locker sits to port. The wide sugar scoop transom includes an integrated, telescoping swim ladder and a walkthrough for convenient boarding at the dock or from the tender. A dinghy davit system with a dedicated outboard crane and rail-mounted outboard bracket supports tender operations.
Wide side decks with integrated stainless steel grab rails along the cabintop facilitate safe movement. Stainless steel dorade-style vents sit just forward of the traveler. A bimini top and dodger with integrated stainless steel grab rails complete the weather protection. The deck layout is thoughtfully designed with practical hardware placement.
Ground tackle features a Maxwell powered windlass that can be operated from the bow or helm, a combination chain and nylon rode, and a Bruce anchor.
The hull design emphasizes a fine entry forward and a flatter run aft, helping balance interior volume with efficient movement through the water.
Construction
The Catalina 42 features a solid fiberglass hull with a molded structural liner, a shoal-draft wing keel, and a lead ballast keel. The balsa-cored deck provides stiffness and weight savings. A proven hull-to-deck joint system ensures structural integrity.
Teak helm seat, companionway hatch boards, and cockpit coaming cubbies have been recently varnished and sealed. Built to be sturdy and straightforward, the Catalina 42 favors practical durability over unnecessary complexity, resulting in a boat that holds up well over time and remains easy to maintain.
