Shannon Custom Downeast 36 Avalon
Overview
About this vessel
"Avalon" was custom built by Shannon Boat Company in Bristol, RI. She was designed by Royal Nowell. By previous builders this design was known as; Bruno Stillman 35, Harris Cuttyhunk 36 and the Nauset 36. Nauset improved and modified the original hull design by adding a molded forward chine/spray rail.
Her bottom is solid fiberglass layup below the waterline and cored above. Her chines are round in the stern, her propeller is protected with a fiberglass keel and bronze shoe that connects the keel and rudder in proper New England Lobster boat fashion.
The interior is handcrafted. It is done in the classic style of white surfaces mixed with varnished hardwood joinery. (note: The cabin sole is not veneer. It is solid wood that is screwed and bunged) Every space available has been made accessible to maximize storage with drawers, doors and lockers.
Entering the main cabin the salon has port and starboard settees with a centerline drop-leaf table. Both settees extend for that little extra room for when they are used for sleeping.
Forward in the salon is the lower helm station with seat to starboard and the companion's navigation seat with flip-up chart table. Both of the seat-backs fold down for additional flat surfaces for use when entertaining or just lounging.
The galley is down and to port. However, it is not so low as to feel isolated from the main cabin. It is U-shaped and very efficient.
Across from galley is an enclosed head that is unique in a boat of this size. It has the typical head, sink, vanity but it also has a separate stall shower.
Head is both electric or manual. Shower sump 12v. Y-valve with macerator for holding tank.
Forward is the owner's cabin with an offset double berth, hanging locker, drawers, shelves and lockers.
Custom mattress and linens. Brass clock. New upholstery and exterior canvas in 2018. Screens for opening ports and overhead hatch.
"Avalon" is a multiple platinum winner at the Chesapeake Bay ACBS (Antique & Classic Boat Society) annual event held at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St Michael's, MD.
