At the heart of Salish Aire is one of the most respected propulsion arrangements ever offered by Nordhavn: the legendary single-engine Lugger diesel paired with an independent wing engine. This configuration embodies the philosophy that has made Nordhavn synonymous with safe, efficient passagemaking around the world.
The primary Lugger engine is renowned for its exceptional reliability, fuel efficiency, and longevity. Operating at modest RPMs and engineered for continuous-duty service, the Lugger provides economical cruising while minimizing maintenance costs and mechanical complexity. With only one main engine to service, owners enjoy easier maintenance, reduced operating expenses, and improved access throughout the engine room.
Complementing the main engine is a fully independent wing engine, providing true get-home capability. Unlike many auxiliary propulsion systems, the wing engine is capable of propelling the vessel independently should the need ever arise, offering peace of mind during extended cruising and offshore passages. It also serves as an additional maneuvering aid and can be exercised regularly to ensure operational readiness.
For many experienced cruisers, the single-engine/wing-engine arrangement represents the ideal balance of efficiency and redundancy—delivering the economy of a single screw vessel while retaining the confidence that comes with a completely separate backup propulsion system.
Whether exploring the Inside Passage, cruising Alaska, or embarking on longer adventures, Salish Aire's propulsion package reflects the thoughtful engineering and practical seamanship that have defined Nordhavn for decades.
The Nordhavn 46 Salish Aire is a later hull (#50) of the proven 46 model. The model that made Nordhavn what it is today! The original quintessential Nordhavn 46 was the boat of Robert Beebe's dreams.
Her hurricane diesel heat system will make the upcoming fall and winter cruising season pleasant and comfortable, no matter where you are. Having just returned from cruising the entire Inside Passage for three summers, this Nordhavn 46 is turnkey, in beautiful shape, and ready to go on the next adventure.
Salish Aire is the plan "B" layout, with the owner's stateroom forward. As you enter the saloon from the cockpit, to starboard is a long settee with a storage cabinet, located forward. To port, there is a U-shaped dinette with a custom teak dining table on a telescoping stainless pedestal. When lowered, the table forms a queen berth. The galley is forward of the dinette. At the forward end of the saloon are steps up to the pilothouse; custom bookshelves with removable teak battens line the wall along the stairs. Proceeding down stairs to the staterooms is a hallway from the saloon. The guest stateroom is to port, with upper and lower berths, desk, hanging locker and drawers. The lower berth pulls out to make a double berth. The main engine room entrance is accessed through a larger N50 engine room door (there are also removable saloon sole hatches). Ventilation is provided by two opening portlights and a dorade vent and forced air system. Across from the GSR is the guest head with separate stall shower.
Leading forward takes you into the owner's stateroom. As you enter the stateroom, to the port is the washer/dryer. To starboard is the OSR head with separate stall shower. The OSR boasts an island berth with a custom HMC "pillow top" mattress, settee and dresser. The baseboard for the berth has been fitted with gas struts, providing easy access under the berth. There are two hanging lockers, one is especially large and is to starboard. Ventilation and natural light is superb, since there are three Lewmar Ocean Series hatches, a dorade and two opening portlights. The main Lewmar hatch over the OSR berth has an OceanAire screen with block out shade and screen. The pilothouse has a watch berth that pulls out to make a large single; there is a fixed table and settee. All original interior overhead lighting has been replaced with Italian Cantalupi LED lighting. There are red Cantalupi lights in the pilothouse overhead for night work too. The interior fabrics are leather.
Engines serviced and all lube oils regularly changed. Extensive spare parts inventory. Headliners replaced with Visquine backing to eliminate moisture transmission causing headliner failure. Swim platform with stern door added (2025). Teak floor grates added in hallway (2025). Zincs changed (2025). Superb condition, both exterior and interior. True attention to detail has been paid to Salish Aire.
