Overview
About this vessel
Located in the world-renowned cruising grounds of the Pacific NW is one of the world's best cruising sailboats. RAYNAD is not only an amazing sailboat but also a phenomenal passage-maker for those that long to cross oceans and superlative home for those who want to be off the grid or linger in those lovely anchorages in tropical lagoons.
Custom designed by Roger Hill and built in New Zealand, the design specification was for an ultimate Go Anywhere yacht with the emphasis on safety and comfort. There was one other requirement and that was that the owners should be able to see out of the yacht when at anchor.
As a result, RAYNAD is a unique yacht with panoramic views of the surroundings, perfect for watching the bears, moose, whales and birds that surround you here in the Inside Passage, or the sunsets and turquoise blue waters of a remote tropical lagoon giving a sailboat all the advantages of a power boat at anchor but the economy and range of a true expedition voyager when under way.
The choice of Galvanised Steel makes possible the four watertight compartments and the bulb keel that gives this yacht a Limit of Positive Stability of 146 as tested and certified at commissioning. This means the boat is amazingly stable when pressed hard under sail or crossing beam seas. The also hull incorporates integral tanks within the keel and the bilges allowing for a phenomenal 550gals diesel and 350 gallons of water which translates into the ability to remain off-grid in beautiful places for several months. Alternatively you could cross oceans under power with enough diesel to also run the 8kva generator and some of the diesel heating system or perhaps the Cruisaire Heat Pump or Hydronic Webasto circulated hot water system. You have enough fresh water from the huge 40 gallon per hour Sea… watermaker to use the washing machine liberally underway and to flush to two heads with fresh water, chosen to avoid that salt water smell from the inside of the boat. If the wind picks up you can shut all that machinery down, raise the sails and enter a world of calm. Raynad is powered while sailing by the 120w 24volt solar panel solar panel and excellent 5 blade 400watt D400 wind generator. You can sail for days and never hear an engine while the Furuno satellite compass steers the boat with laser accuracy and the AIS transponder works to keep you clear of traffic. The hard dodger makes for comfortable dry watches out of the wind and shaded from the sun.
The best reason to have a vessel like RAYNAD is that whatever the wind and whatever the weather, you can go from point to point to suit yourself because RAYNAD has what it takes to get you there under sail or under power. Now thats a passage maker! Unlike most boats, RAYNAD has actually covered the miles. Sailed only by a retired couple, this boats log book shows 65,000 open ocean miles in the last ten years. The last trip was 9,500 nautical miles from Valdivia in Chile to Juneau Alaska - 7,500 of those miles were non stop from Valdivia to Hawaii. VERY few boats can make that kind of a trip.
RAYNAD is now ready for the next safari – perhaps a trip through the North West Passage? For those that want to explore the wonders of the oceans they sail over, the boat currently has a dive compressor and full dive gear for two adults. This equipment is new and lightly used. All of this is available with the boat as an optional extra. Raynad was fully imported into the US and is tax paid and now a USCG Documented US vessel. By choice, the owners did not export the boat from NZ and so it remains tax paid there and could return free of import duty. It is currently in Alaska where there will be no sales tax assessed to the new owner.
