Custom Chinese Lug Rigged Schooner
Overview
About this vessel
This custom-built Chinese lug rigged schooner named Hai Shi (Sea Lion) is a one-of-a-kind vessel developed from L Francis Herreshoff plan number 107, the same lines used to develop the Freedom 40 and the Revolution 36. Launched prior to completion in January 2002 by ORCA Manufacturing and Trading P/L, the boat presents a rare and special opportunity with very little use.
Construction
The hull is strip planked Western Red Cedar (22 x 22 mm) with epoxy glue and edge fastening, featuring a laminated Douglas Fir keel and stem. Hull sheathing comprises three layers of 751 gram M2 Triaxial E Glass set in epoxy (2,253 grams M2 laminates), with survey-required ribs at 450 mm centres glassed over with 3000 grams Bi-axial E Glass set in epoxy. The treated steel box section keel runs full length and is fitted with 2,550 kg of lead. Interior fit-out is plywood epoxy glassed with Deodar Cedar panelling on bulkheads and hand-crafted teak trim throughout. The coach house is plywood glassed over with epoxy fairing.
The masts are free-standing in tabernacles, constructed using the Nobel method with round hollow section tapered E glass sheathing set in epoxy. Fully battened tan sails were made in Hong Kong, with a mainsail area of 34.22 m² and foresail area of 16.22 m² (total 50.44 m²).
Accommodation
The vessel sleeps five berths. The interior comprises two saloon seating/berths with table plus a removable pipe cot berth over the starboard side settee. The galley features twin sinks, a metho stove, and a portable gas single burner for cockpit use only, with glasses and crockery racks. A lee box (top loading insulated) could be refrigerated if a unit were supplied. The head includes an electric toilet, hand basin, and shower facility on the port side. The starboard side has a full-size chart table. The forward cabin comprises a large double berth with seating port and starboard. Fresh water is held in 10 litre containers totalling 240 litres, with approximately 200 litres of built-in water tankage under the saloon sole (not in use). Lighting is minimal with electric options, solar lights, and oil lamps. Solar vent fans serve the head compartment and saloon, and inbuilt dorade vents supply fresh air to the main cabin.
Condition
The vessel is offered for sale as-is and is due for slipping and anti-foul bottom paint. New through-hull sea cocks for engine cooling are recommended, with fittings to be supplied.
