Big Enough for the Bay - But Still Easy to Handle
A major advantage of the Catalina 36 Mk II is that it feels like a "real cruising boat" without becoming overwhelming. At roughly 36 feet, it has enough waterline and displacement for rough water comfort but is still manageable by a couple or even singlehanded with good gear and an autopilot. That's ideal for Bay sailors because conditions often require frequent reefing, quick maneuvering in current, docking in crosswinds, and handling gusts without excessive drama. The Mk II cockpit layout is especially appreciated for shorthanded sailing.
Excellent Visibility and Cockpit Layout
The Mk II redesign improved cockpit ergonomics, walk-through transom, deck organization, and interior brightness and ventilation. For Bay sailing, the large cockpit is a major benefit because much of the sailing is active—trimming constantly, reefing often, dodging ferries, and working currents. The cockpit feels secure while still roomy enough for guests.
Good Power for Motoring Against Current
The Bay's currents can exceed 4 knots near the Golden Gate and under the Bay Bridge. The Universal 35 hp diesel gives the Catalina 36 Mk II enough power to punch current and chop effectively. Accommodations
The owners cabin forward is comfortable and well ventilated and has a private entrance to the head to port. Aft is the main cabin with traditional table. Two seats and a game table to starboard can be made into a settee or berth. The galley is a 'U' shape to port with composite counter tops and sinks that are near the centerline for proper drainage underway. Aft is the guest cabin with privacy door.
