About this vessel

"Frances Stewart" The Last Swanson was built over a period of 38 years to standards of perfection by the finest craftsmen in the finest materials. Custom designed by Ron Swanson for the owner with Jim Swanson consulting during the build. "Frances Stewart" is a masterpiece built and fitted using Huon Pine, Californian Redwood, American White Oak, Burmese teak, Brazilian Mahogany and New Guinea Rosewood. 90% completed with owner sadly passing away before completion and launch. The family have attempted to calculate man hours with just material costs reported as exceeding 1 million dollars. Included and in many cases fitted (as new) extensive cruising inventory including spars, rigging, navigation electronics, machinery, deck hardware, refrigeration, sails, diesel heater, etc. Full inventory can be supplied upon request. Existing shed and Master Shipwright Lawrence Giles available to finish "Frances Stewart" prior to launching.

Designed by Ron Swanson in 1980 as a custom design for owner. West system glue and sheathing. Backbone - Brazilian Mahogany. Rib Timbers - laminated American White Oak. Stringers - laminated Douglas Fir. Planking - 4 layers - 3 layers of Californian Redwood, all 10mm thick, 1st fore & aft, 2nd and 3rd diagonal, 4th layer Douglas Fir diagonal opposing. Floor timbers - laminated American White Oak. Hull - Dynel sheathed. Deadwood - American White Oak and Douglas Fir. Rudder Post - laminated American White Oak. Rudder - American White Oak and Douglas Fir laminated with lead ballast on bottom and lower trailing edge. Ballast - Lead 5 ¾ tonnes external through bolted with 14 1" 316 stainless steel through floors and pocketed into ballast. Fastenings Hull etc - all 316 stainless steel bolts and bronze nails. Chain plates - all 3" x ½" 316 stainless steel bolted to inside hull and fixed through hull. Deck beams - laminated Douglas Fir. Deck clamp - laminated Douglas Fir. Insulation - 35 mm thick CSR foam underside of ply deck to ceiling. Deck - 2 layers of 3/8" Rot treated Buiznel Ply. Bulkheads - Rot treated Bruiznel Ply 1" & 3/4". Flooring - Queensland White Beech glued to 3/8" ply. Decking - 7/16" Burmese Teak. Hatches - Butterfly hatch main deck - Burmese Teak. Hatches Stainless Steel - 316 polished main ship glass to aft cabin, navigation, galley and head area and screened. Engine Beds - Iron Bark laminated - bolted through floors and hull with 16" 316 stainless steel bolts 8 off. Deck House - New Guinea Rosewood and Douglas Fir laminated beams. Huon Pine fan lights & doors. Deck Cap Rails - Burmese Teak. Deckhouse - 10mm laminated heat-treated glass and 6mm laminated heat treated fanlights and doors. Mainship polish 316 stainless steel opening hatch front of house. Opening Ports in Hull - Mainship polished stainless steel 316 ports - 8 of category one ocean sailing C/E proof with screens. Aft Cabin & Cockpit - Ronstand bronze/chromed opening ports from USA with screens. Paint - Hull, Dog House. All paint supplied. To date the boat has had all undercoats using International Perfection. Finish coat also supplied. Fit Out Completed by Ian Morris Master Shipwright and Roger Singleton owner and Cabinet Maker. Solid timber fit out using Brazilian Mahogany, Huon Pine, American White Oak timbers. All hand done and polished with 5 coats of International satin varnish. Bulkhead Panelling - 'V' jointed, cupboard doors 'V-jointed and extra timbers Brazilian Mahogany. Main doors - Huon Pine. Bench tops, vanity basins and benches, saloon table, navigation table etc = Huon Pine. Flooring = Queensland White Beech 10mm glued to 3/8" Marine Ply. Ceiling = v-jointed 6" Marine Ply painted with international satin between exposed deck beams. Deck beams - laminated and polished Douglas Fir. Stair access - curved laminated American White Oak hinged for engine room access.
