About this vessel
This steel vessel was built as a tug for Hamburg Harbour and worked there until 1955. It subsequently served the Berlin Harbour and Warehouse Company (Berliner Hafen- und Lagerhausgesellschaft mbH) until 1990. Harbour tugs like Pit play a decisive role in shipping, safely manoeuvring large cargo ships, tankers and cruise ships through the confined areas of ports and assisting with mooring, departure and turning operations.
After its well-earned retirement, Pit came into capable hands, who lovingly restored it and converted it into a comfortable cruising vessel. Its appearance now only hints at its capable past, though this is nearly outshone by its nostalgic retro charm. The 4-cylinder Mercedes Benz diesel engine, however, reveals its true vocation. Here 12 litres of displacement work through a hydraulic transmission onto a propeller with a diameter of 1.10 m.
Thanks to good care and regular maintenance, the tug is in immaculate condition. In 2026 a complete repaint was carried out. Last year the underwater hull was renewed and this year the stuffing box on the drive shaft was renewed.
