About this vessel
Designed and built in 1961 by Bob Salthouse in two-skin heart kauri with teak combings, Kailua is testament to her current and past guardians who have lavished her with care and attention. Elegant and graceful from every angle, Kailua is also deceptive with a turn of speed that will embarrass most similar size and generation classics.
The most recent full refit was carried out in 2016 by the Nautique Ship Yard in West Auckland and included a Hino 150HP turbo diesel repower alongside a full interior and exterior makeover. This extended to new teak floors, galley and heads, upholstery and full varnish restoration. Since then the topsides have been repainted and show like new.
Professionally maintained under her current ownership of five years, Kailua presents beautifully and is turn-key and ready to be enjoyed. A winner of the Classic Yacht Association Rudder Cup launch race, Kailua cruises comfortably at 10 to 12 knots with a spirited 14.5 knots at wide open throttle.
Retaining her original character and period fittings, Kailua is far more than a show piece, and provides the full range of creature comforts required for enjoyable weekend cruising or more extended periods away. With full headroom, excellent compressor-driven refrigeration, hot water off engine, cockpit shower, ample water and a modern electronics package including auto-pilot, this classic Salthouse really needs to be seen to be fully appreciated.
Accommodation consists of a forward double V berth with infill, a single pilot berth amidships, comfortable saloon and a full galley with separate fridge and freezer, gas oven and hob and an aft cockpit that can be fully enclosed with clears.
