Overview
"Foxy Lady" is Australia's iconic pilot house yacht by Mastercraft Marine, designed for ocean cruising in comfort, style, and safety. She has had two devoted owners since launch and boasts a distinguished history including first place in the inaugural Round the World Millennium Odyssey Race in 2000. The builder, Eddie Buizen, envisioned a cruising yacht that combines comfortable interior living with excellent visibility through wraparound armour glass from the main saloon to the outside world. The cockpit and saloon are on the same level, providing an interior/exterior connection and facilitating easy management of the aft cockpit or interior helm positions. This yacht is easy to sail, well suited for short-handed crews and cruising couples. Recently, she has been slipped, antifouled, polished, serviced, and surveyed.
The Buizen 48, first built in 1990 and launched in 1991, is one of the world's most charming cruising yachts. Designed and built in Australia by Mastercraft Marine and crafted by shipwrights Eddy and Fritz Buizen, each vessel is a floating home featuring glorious handmade furniture with exceptional craftsmanship, comfort, and performance.
The yacht is designed to ensure enjoyment of the journey as much as the destination. The Buizen 48 fleet has an impressive sailing record, including multiple crossings of Bass Strait, voyages to the Great Barrier Reef, Noumea, and Lord Howe Island, and participation in the Millennium Cruise – an 18-month around-the-world trip.
Onboard, the Buizen 48 offers a prestigious home on the water with ample shelter from the weather. The interior showcases exquisite teak joinery and teak and holly flooring with semi or full gloss finishes. The headliner sports a buff, suede-like material, and leather upholstery is an option. The pilothouse offers full headroom and is surrounded by laminated 13mm safety-glass windows, providing a cozy yet connected atmosphere with the outside world. Inside, there is an L-shaped lounge seating four, a lounge and cocktail cabinet on the portside, and a lower enclosed helm station featuring comfortable seating.
The galley is airy and designed to keep the cook engaged with the crew, featuring craftsmanship-quality teak cabinets and lockers. Appliances include a life-sized eutectic fridge, deep freezer, microwave, gimballed oven and stove with a stainless steel splash-back, extensive bench space, and a deep circular sink. Adjacent is the dayhead, a spacious bathroom with an easy-clean moulded liner, shower, vanity, and toilet.
Sleeping accommodations are highly desirable with a guest cabin amidships featuring upper and lower single bunks with thick mattresses, teak hanging lockers, reading lights, carpets, and portholes. The master cabin in the bow is fully teak-lined with an island or full-width double berth, dressing space, privacy, and a generously sized en suite bathroom. The aft port cabin has a double bunk, while the starboard aft cabin includes a single bunk and a nav station.
Outdoor living is equally accommodating, with a teak-laid, moulded cockpit seating up to 12. It includes a dodger, various seating arrangements for all seasons, pushpit benches at the stern with drink holders, and a pedestal at the helm for steering and anchor control. The cockpit also offers three storage lockers, a wide platform at the transom, and a freshwater transom shower.
The Buizen 48 features wide bulwarks backed by high stanchions and safety lines. The sturdy keel-stepped mast has a double-spreader rig with a hydraulic mast furling system, allowing both the overlapping genoa and mainsail to be unfurled easily from the cockpit. The rig includes hydraulic steering, solid boom vang and preventer, and standard Autohelm tridata self-steering gauges.
With a four-cylinder, freshwater-cooled 100hp Volvo engine, the Buizen 48 exhibits capable sailing performance, maintaining about 7 knots on long passages. The yacht is celebrated for comfort, craftsmanship, and its luxury pilothouse design, which makes it an ideal cruiser for diverse wind and weather conditions.
