Dry Stack Boat Storage Explained

From Home to the Water Without Touching a Trailer

Lifestyle13 October 2026

There's nothing quite like a day on the water, and the less time it takes to get there, the more of it you get to enjoy. For most trailer boat owners, getting out is part of the routine: hitch up, take your turn at the ramp, then wash everything down once you're home.

Dry stack boat storage offers a different way of doing things. Your boat is launched for you and waiting in the water, so your day starts the moment you arrive at the marina.

Below, we explain how a dry stack marina works, what the process looks like day to day, and why more boat owners are making the switch.

What Is Dry Stack Boat Storage?

Think of dry stack storage as a multi-level car park for boats. Instead of keeping your boat on a trailer at home or in a wet berth at the marina, it's stored out of the water in a secure, purpose-built rack system.

When you want to go boating, the marina team uses a specialised forklift to lift your boat from its rack and lower it into the water. When you're done, they lift it out, wash the hull, flush the engine and return it to its rack.

How Dry Stack Storage Works: The Text-and-Launch System

Many dry stack marinas, such as Tamaki Marine Park, have streamlined the process to just a few steps:

  1. Send a text. Message your berth number (for example, B5 or C6) to the marina team about an hour before you plan to arrive.

  2. Arrive and load up. Park, load your rods, cooler and gear onto the trolley, and walk down to your boat, already waiting in the water.

  3. Enjoy your day. Head out for a day of fishing, cruising or watersports.

  4. Return and relax. Bring the boat back to the marina pontoon. The team handles the lift-out, fresh-water hull washdown and engine flush, then stores it safely away.

The Benefits of Dry Stack Boat Storage

For trailer boat and launch owners, dry stack storage offers some real advantages over keeping a boat at home or in a permanent marina berth.

  • No trailer to manage. No reversing down a steep boat ramp, no saltwater on your wheel bearings, and no trailer servicing, inspections or registration to keep up with.

  • Better hull protection. Your boat spends its downtime out of the water, which helps prevent marine growth and osmosis and reduces the need for regular antifouling.

  • Improved security. A secure facility helps protect your boat from theft and the weather, compared with parking it on the street or in the driveway.

  • More time on the water. With launch, retrieval and washdown taken care of, your weekends are spent boating rather than towing and scrubbing.

Is Dry Stack Storage Right for You?

Dry stack storage suits many trailer boats and smaller launches, but every facility has its own size and weight limits, so it's worth checking what your local marina can lift. When comparing costs, weigh the annual fees against what you currently spend on trailer upkeep, ramp fees, fuel for towing and your own time.
