About
The story of DNA Boats
DNA Boats is a New Zealand, family owned and operated aluminium boat manufacturer focused on building strong, safe and highly customisable pontoon and plate boats for the Australasian market. The company emphasises performance, safety, and usability in demanding marine environments, with designs proven and tested in harsh New Zealand conditions.
The origins of the business trace back to founder and Managing Director Jason Elvines, whose lifelong passion for hunting, fishing and the New Zealand outdoors naturally led into boat building. Jason initially built a small aluminium boat for himself; interest from friends saw the first boat sold quickly, prompting him to build another with refinements to the design. This cycle of building, improving and selling laid the foundations of what would become DNA Boats.
In 2006, at the age of 21, Jason completed his apprenticeship and established Ace Engineering NZ Ltd, a company focused on designing and manufacturing aluminium boats. Building on that engineering base, the dedicated DNA brand was officially launched in 2008. Since then, the operation has grown into a specialist team of around ten people, producing high‑quality aluminium boats while keeping the founder closely involved. Jason remains hands‑on in both design and production, and also plays a key role in sales, supported by his wife Melissa, maintaining a strong family and owner‑driven culture throughout the business.
DNA Boats positions itself around craftsmanship, innovation and safety. The company builds a comprehensive range that includes pontoon centre consoles, pontoon cuddy cabins, pontoon hardtops and custom plate boats, with models spanning compact inshore craft through to larger offshore‑capable hardtops and fully custom builds. All boats are aluminium and are designed to be strong, reliable and safe, with a clear emphasis on positive buoyancy and stability. The firm describes its boats as providing strong, safe and customisable solutions tailored to a wide range of boating activities including serious fishing, diving and family recreation.
A key differentiator is DNA’s X‑Series pontoon hull design philosophy. In their own development, the team set out to achieve what they describe as a “perfect balance” of stability, soft and dry ride quality, and interior space. One of the main challenges they addressed was how to increase beam and internal room in a pontoon hull without requiring significantly more horsepower to push a larger wetted surface through the water. The solution was to introduce tapered, down‑turned chines to the hull. This geometry allows the pontoons to be stepped outward for greater internal beam and usable deck space, while slightly lifting the pontoons to reduce drag once on the plane.
These tapered chines also play a major role in spray management. Because they are smoothly curved with an aggressively down‑turned profile, they deflect spray more effectively than relying on pontoons alone. As a result, spray is thrown further away from the boat and in a more downward trajectory, contributing to a much drier ride in rougher conditions.
DNA’s signature tapered pontoon design further sets the brand apart. Unlike more conventional straight‑sided pontoons, DNA pontoons taper towards the bow. This is a complex feature to manufacture, made feasible by the company’s use of computer‑aided design (CAD) and precision CNC router cutting. The taper not only provides a sharper, more aesthetically refined look, but also reduces bulky mass at the bow, which helps the boat ride more softly through chop and waves. Combined with the X‑Series chines, this creates a hull that the company states offers a smoother, softer and more comfortable ride than many other positive‑buoyancy chambered boats.
Each pontoon is divided into individual airtight chambers during assembly, and the lower hull floor plates and substructure are arranged to form an additional airtight flotation chamber running along the full keel. This multi‑chamber configuration greatly enhances both strength and buoyancy, resulting in hulls that are described as virtually unsinkable and delivering exceptional safety margins in adverse conditions. Safety is consistently highlighted as a core value, with DNA noting its boats’ strong safety profile and the inherently secure nature of its pontoon systems.
DNA’s X‑Series pontoon hulls also feature full flat floors. By eliminating a raised angular section between the hull and pontoon edge, the boats provide a continuous flat deck surface, which improves comfort and practicality on board. An additional toe space is integrated beneath the pontoon section, allowing users to hook their feet under the edge for a more secure stance when fishing or moving about. This design lets occupants stand closer to the side of the boat while remaining braced against the gunwales, reducing the need to lean outward and enhancing both safety and ergonomics.
In the hardtop models, especially the XHT series, DNA incorporates an optically correct curved glass windscreen. This large curved glass panel offers wide, unobstructed visibility, improving safety and situational awareness. It is complemented by swept, curved aluminium paneling and precision‑tapered folds, combining functional benefits with a modern, high‑end aesthetic that visually distinguishes DNA’s boats from more conventional plate aluminium craft.
Welding quality and craftsmanship are emphasised as another core strength. The DNA team focuses heavily on weld strength, consistency and cosmetic finish, working with both GTAW (TIG) and GMAW (MIG) processes. Attention to weld quality is presented not just as an engineering requirement but as a visible marker of build quality and long‑term durability, reinforcing the brand’s positioning as a premium manufacturer of aluminium pontoon and plate boats.
Across the site, DNA Boats reinforces a clear identity: Safe | Reliable | Strong. The boats are designed and tested in New Zealand’s demanding marine environment and are sold through a network of dealers, including representation across New Zealand and into Australia. The company is New Zealand‑owned and operated, maintaining close control over design and production and offering custom design options for clients requiring specialised layouts or larger bespoke builds.
In summary, DNA Boats is a specialist aluminium boat builder that combines hands‑on craftsmanship, modern CAD/CNC production, innovative pontoon hull design and a strong focus on safety to deliver stable, dry‑riding and virtually unsinkable boats. Their family ownership, founder‑led design approach and continuous refinement since the mid‑2000s underpin a brand identity centred on New Zealand heritage, technical innovation and dependable performance on the water.
