About
The story of Innovision Boats
Innovision Boats is a New Zealand manufacturer of premium alloy (aluminium) recreational and fishing boats, focused on delivering a soft-riding, safe and high‑performing trailer boat for serious anglers, divers and family boating. The company is recognised within the New Zealand and Australasian markets for its distinctive hull design, high build quality and strong engineering, as well as for multiple industry design awards.
The business was founded in 2012 by professional sailor and tradesman Simon Minoprio, who grew up on the water in New Zealand and spent many years travelling the world in professional sailing. Drawing on experience from sailing advanced carbon-fibre race yachts and from working at renowned superyacht builder Alloy Yachts, he identified ways to significantly improve the hydrodynamics and ride characteristics of typical aluminium trailer boats used in New Zealand.
From this insight, the Innovision hull concept was developed, and the first boat produced was the Innovision 616 Explorer. Since then, the company has continually refined and evolved its range, working to improve each new boat and build out a family of models and sizes. Over more than a decade, Innovision has focused on combining performance, safety, ride comfort and interior volume in a distinctive hull form tailored to the challenging conditions commonly found in New Zealand and Australasian waters.
Innovision emphasises a philosophy of better by design. Over the past 11 years, the team has worked to create what they describe as one of the best alloy hull designs on the market, culminating in their latest generation hull. This design aims to deliver:
- Exceptionally soft ride in chop and swell
- Large internal volume compared with equivalent-length alloy trailer boats
- High stability at rest for fishing and family use
- Improved safety in following seas and bar crossings
Their point of difference is especially noticeable in the Australasian trailer boat market. The latest generation hull is engineered with features such as:
- Plumb (vertical) bow – providing the finest bow entry among New Zealand trailer boats, increasing waterline length so the boats ride like a vessel 1–1.5 m longer. This significantly reduces slamming and pitching, creating a softer and safer ride.
- Hydrodynamic Stability Chines (HDSC) – carefully shaped chines that add buoyancy and stability at rest, and generate targeted hydrodynamic lift under way. This helps control the boat’s motion in rough conditions and greatly reduces broaching in heavy downwind situations.
- Higher, more voluminous bow – to add buoyancy forward and make it more difficult for the bow to bury, enhancing safety when crossing bars or in steep seas.
- Extended foredeck over the side sheets – to deflect water in extreme conditions and contribute to a drier, more secure ride.
Innovision’s boats are known for their modern styling and attention to detail. The company uses certified 5083 marine‑grade alloy plate and a robust underfloor structure with full-length longitudinal girders, keel bar and doubler plate, supported by stringers and interconnecting frames. This construction approach provides substantial backbone strength and durability, and is backed by a 10‑year structural warranty, reflecting the brand’s confidence in its engineering and build quality.
The product range is built around maximising enjoyment on the water in all conditions. Innovision designs its boats for multiple uses, including serious fishing, diving, cruising and family day trips, while keeping comfort and safety at the forefront. The company offers several distinct styles, including:
- Explorer (Hard Top) – a stylish hard-top model designed to keep occupants warm and dry in rough conditions, suitable as both an overnight and day boat.
- Venture (Walk Around) – a full walkaround design that combines the fishability of a centre console with the shelter and overnight capability of a hard top.
- Amphib (Amphibious) – an amphibious range that merges Innovision’s hull performance and stability with amphibious technology for enhanced mobility and access on land and water.
- Sports (Soft Top) – an all-rounder day boat with a soft top and a generous cabin, designed to offer value and versatility without compromising cockpit space.
- Active (Centre Console/Cabin) – a centre-console/cabin range developed to maximise deck space and fishability, with an integral buoyancy “life ring” around the hull on centre-console versions to improve safety if swamped.
- Sedan (Cruising) – a trailerable cruising boat configured for extended time on the water, with options such as diesel stern leg or outboard setups and multiple interior layout choices.
- Mino (Tiller Steer) – a compact, highly versatile tiller-steer model aimed at easy handling and adventure, while retaining the performance benefits of the Innovision hull design.
Each range is offered with customisable options for layout, finish and equipment, enabling owners to tailor their boat to how they fish, dive or cruise. The company also undertakes bespoke design-and-build projects, working alongside design partner Bakewell‑White Yacht Design for recreational or commercial vessels, including those requiring survey, in a wide range of sizes. This capability reflects Innovision’s combination of hands-on craftsmanship with advanced naval architecture.
Innovision’s mission is to create quality aluminium boats that owners are proud to own, custom‑built to their needs and built to perform safely and comfortably in demanding marine environments. Their boats are described as premium New Zealand-made fishing boats and aluminium boats that allow customers to confidently enjoy the best of local and offshore waters. The company’s commitment to innovation and engineering has been recognised with multiple design awards, including the Best Design Awards where models such as the IV616 Venture have achieved Gold in competitive consumer categories.
In addition to serving the New Zealand market, Innovision is now exporting to Australia, positioning its boats as some of Australasia’s leading trailer boats. They provide guidance and support for customers importing boats into Australia, underscoring their growing regional presence. Overall, Innovision Boats combines a performance‑driven hull concept, robust alloy construction, and personalised customisation to deliver high‑end recreational and fishing boats that stand out in the Australasian market.
