About
The story of Lewis Boats
Lewis Boats is a long‑established Australian ski and wakeboard boat manufacturer with origins dating back to the early 1930s. Recognised as Australia’s oldest and one of its most respected ski boat builders, the company has built its reputation on uncompromising quality, performance, and thoughtful design, positioning itself as a leader in the ski and wake boat segment.
In its early years, Lewis produced handcrafted wooden boats, using high‑grade timbers and traditional boatbuilding techniques to maximise quality and durability. As marine technology and materials evolved, the company transitioned to lightweight, high‑quality fibreglass construction. Modern Lewis boats feature foam‑filled internal stringer systems and contemporary marine engineering that deliver greater speed, space, and comfort than the classic wooden craft of previous generations, while still preserving the brand’s handcrafted heritage.
Craftsmanship remains central to the Lewis philosophy. The company emphasises the use of highly skilled boatbuilders who specialise in precise fibreglass lay‑up, careful joining of hulls and superstructures, engine installation, and detailed trim and upholstery work. This hands‑on approach underpins the brand’s focus on producing stylish, durable boats that reflect consistent, high‑end workmanship year after year.
Over many decades in the marine industry, Lewis has adhered to a clear guiding principle: build the best possible product at an economical and affordable price, and back it with prompt, dependable service. Innovation has been a hallmark of the brand, as it has progressively expanded and refined its range from the original two models to a broad line‑up of specialised ski and wake boats. Performance is treated as a core requirement, with Lewis models developed to meet and set demanding industry standards for towing power, handling, and on‑water comfort.
A significant chapter in the company’s modern history began in 1982, when Steve Parker acquired the Lewis name and the then‑inactive Tornado and Fireball moulds from Albert Lewis and rebuilt the operation into a strong, recognised ski boat manufacturer. In April 2021, ownership passed to Nathan and Ebony Dark. Nathan’s passion for boating was shaped early through his family’s Lewis dealership, and together Nathan and Ebony spent around 15 years as second‑hand ski boat dealers before taking over the Lewis brand. Their experience within the ski boat sector and long‑term familiarity with Lewis products inform the current direction of the company.
Under the Dark family, Lewis has focused on modernising its well‑known boats while retaining their proven hulls and core characteristics. This includes updating and enhancing colour schemes, introducing new technology, and refreshing layouts to match contemporary expectations for comfort, usability, and style. As a young family with three children who actively use the boats they build, the owners place strong emphasis on real‑world testing: regularly taking the boats on the water to monitor performance, handling, and comfort, and using that feedback to keep improving quality and value.
Lewis highlights a set of clear values: a commitment to Australian manufacturing, a family‑oriented approach to business and boating, a focus on performance and quality materials, and a determination to listen to customer feedback. The brand notes that many prospective buyers come to Lewis after speaking with existing owners, reflecting a user base that acts as an informal advocacy network built on long‑term satisfaction. Rather than relying solely on brochures or marketing claims, Lewis encourages potential customers to arrange test drives so they can experience the boats’ performance and craftsmanship first‑hand.
Today, Lewis Boats remains 100% Australian‑owned and continues to produce its boats on the Central Coast of New South Wales. The company positions itself as a proudly Australian heritage brand that has evolved from handcrafted wooden ski boats to a modern fibreglass range, while preserving its founding ethos of quality, reliability, and authentic, family‑based boating experience.
