Overview

About this vessel

Built to sail the oceans, Humdinger is one of five WG-35 trimarans designed and built by Walter Greene in 1982, with four still actively racing. She is an elegant design purpose-made for fast cruising over open waters, with a noble history of many Trans Atlantic and Pacific crossings. Everything is up to date and she is ready to go again.

Humdinger was originally designed and built for Donald Young and Shirley Weese. The couple sailed the boat across the Atlantic through five gales to reach the start of the 1982 Round Britain and Ireland Race at Plymouth, England. The race was for double-handed crews with four stops and a distance of approximately 1,865 miles. They finished third in class (boats 30' to 35') and 13th overall in a fleet of 69 finishers. The boat was then chartered to German sailor Klaus Schroat for the 1982 Route du Rhum, a French single-handed transatlantic race, finishing in 23 days and 18 hours under the name "Aspen". Because Humdinger finished the Route du Rhum, it qualifies for the French multihull organization the "Golden Oldies".

In the mid-1990s, the owners moved to the Seattle area and shipped the boat overland. Russell Brown of Port Townsend, Washington, rebuilt the boat with a new rotating mast designed by Roger Hatfield of Gold Coast Yachts. The boat was sailed in the 1998 Swiftsure Lightship Classic to first place in the multihull division. Humdinger was sold to Lawrence Olsen in 1999 and moved to San Francisco Bay, where it was sailed in many crewed events. The focus shifted to single and double-handed events, with highlights including: 2010 Single-Handed Farallones first place multihull division; 2011 SSS Longpac second to finish behind the Class 40 "California Condor"; 2011 Single-Handed Farallones first place multihulls and overall; 2014 Pacific Cup first place Hokule'a (Multihull) division. The boat was sailed back to San Francisco Bay from Oahu in 18 days, motoring only to enter the Golden Gate plus 4 hours in the Pacific High. Humdinger is a sister ship to A Capella, which won the first running of the Route du Rhum in 1978 under Mike Birch.

Spars, Rigging and Sails

The 52-foot rotating mast was designed by Roger Hatfield of Gold Coast Yachts and built by Russell Brown of Port Townsend, Washington, in approximately 1996. It is a 4/5 fractional rig with runners and allows for a square-top mainsail. A 6-foot long articulating carbon bow pole flies the spinnaker and screecher. The jib is on a Harken MK 4 furler. The main sail has the halyard and three reefs leading aft to the cockpit. Internal jib and spinnaker halyards exit to line stoppers and a winch on the mast. Lazy jacks hold the boom up while reefing. Standing rigging is 1x19 stainless steel wire (new 2009, except headstay new about 2016). Two Lewmar #48ST, three Lewmar #40ST, two Lewmar #30ST, and one Lewmar #6 winches. Antal mast track with bat cars and two line stoppers. Spinlock line stoppers (two single, one double, two triple). Main traveler, jib tracks and cars, mainsheet and spinnaker blocks are Harken big boat hardware. Multiple sets of low-stretch spinnaker and screecher sheets.

Main sail is carbon laminate with full batten (fiberglass rod) and three reefs in fair condition (Pineapple, 2008). Jib is carbon laminate with taffeta on both sides, always rolled, in good condition (Pineapple, 2008). Screecher is laminate on Harken furler, little used, in very good condition.
