The First 47.7 was designed by Bruce Farr, one of the most successful performance yacht designers. The hull was developed for speed and efficiency rather than handicap rules, resulting in powerful but slippery hull lines. The boat accelerates quickly out of tacks, reaches double-digit speeds when the Bay breeze fills in, and is fast enough to sail efficiently against current.

Excellent Upwind Ability for Beating into Bay Wind

San Francisco Bay sailing is often upwind, especially from Berkeley, Sausalito, or Alameda toward the Gate. The First 47.7 excels here with its deep high-aspect keel, balanced hull, and large fractional rig. These features allow it to point high and track cleanly upwind even in heavier weather, resulting in efficient tacking up the Cityfront, strong performance beating into the afternoon westerlies, and less leeway in current and chop.

Large Sail Plan That Thrives in Bay Breeze

The boat carries about 1,464 ft² of upwind sail area and much more downwind with spinnakers. In San Francisco's typical afternoon wind of 18 - 30 knots, the 47.7 hits a sweet spot with plenty of horsepower for light mornings, reefing options for heavy afternoon breeze, and powerful downwind sailing under the Golden Gate.

Stability and Control in Bay Chop

San Francisco Bay chop is short and steep. The First 47.7's characteristics help with its displacement of approximately 25,000 lb, lead ballast keel, and wide beam of approximately 14'9", giving strong form stability, good tracking in waves, and comfortable motion compared with lighter race boats.

Big, Ergonomic Deck for Bay Racing

The cockpit and deck layout were designed for racing with twin wheels, large winch layout, and open working cockpit. The wheel allows the helmsman to sit comfortably on the coaming with an unobstructed view forward. Features include teak slatted inlaid seats and mounted electronics in the cockpit coaming. The traveler is located near the helm for optimal boom and mainsheet control. A folding swim platform retracts easily to the sleek lines of the boat when racing.

The plush interior offers many exquisite details. The warm tones of cherry stained interior greet you as you enter the salon with plenty of ventilation accented by 6'4 feet of headroom. Luxurious appointments such as a gimbaled salon table that can be tilted when heeling and companionway steps framed with aluminum create a unique atmosphere. The three-cabin configuration has large berths, hanging closets, and functional lighting. The forward cabin suite has a private head, port settee and plenty of room for storage. The navigation station is to port with a large chart table, plenty of room for books, electronics, and charts. The galley is fully equipped with a large front-loading refrigerator, three burner stove and oven, and more than enough counter space for preparing meals. The boat features brilliant white hull and teak decks.
