Overview
About this vessel
"So Long" - From Naval Workhorse to Capable Coastal Cruiser
So Long is a vessel with a history few can rival. Built in 1964 by Phoenix Shipbuilders in Tasmania to a Jack Botterill design, she began life serving the Australian Navy as workboat AWB 4003. Purpose-built for durability, load-carrying capacity and dependable service, her origins established the robust foundations that continue to define her today.
In 1995, So Long entered a new chapter. Over the latter half of the 1990s she underwent an extensive, thoughtfully executed rebuild with the clear intention of transforming a proven workboat into a practical and comfortable coastal cruiser. During this period she gained her raised foredeck, expansive covered side and rear decks, and a well-proportioned flybridge. The quality of workmanship and the careful shift from commercial utility to classic pleasure boat is a genuine credit to her previous owners.
Today, So Long presents as a capable and inviting coastal cruiser, offering wide sheltered decks, modern electronics, a single-level saloon and helm, two bathrooms, and accommodation for up to six, including a forward master cabin with ensuite. Her economical GM Detroit diesel is one of the few reminders of her working heritage.
Recently slipped, sandblasted, primed and antifouled in September 2025 - and accompanied by extensive service records and historical documentation - So Long is fully prepared for her next adventure.
