About
The story of Fountaine Pajot
Fountaine Pajot is a leading French boatbuilder specialising in luxury catamarans for sailing and power cruising, with a heritage that stretches back to 1976. Born from a shared passion for the sea and offshore racing, the shipyard was founded by Jean‑François Fountaine, Yves Pajot, Daniel Givon and Rémi Tristan, and quickly made its name designing innovative light racing dinghies and ocean‑going prototypes before pioneering one of the world’s first dedicated ranges of cruising catamarans. Today it stands as a global reference in multihull design and construction, with thousands of boats cruising every ocean.
From its origins near La Rochelle, Fountaine Pajot has grown into a major industrial group with around 800–1,200 people working across four production sites in the Charente‑Maritime and Gironde regions. The company designs and builds sailing catamarans from 40 to 80 feet, high‑end motor yacht catamarans and, through its sister brand Dufour, monohull sailing yachts. Its sailing and power ranges are recognised for combining genuine sea‑keeping qualities with generous volumes, refined interiors and layouts that privilege convivial living spaces for family cruising, charter and long‑range voyages.
The group’s ethos is rooted in performance, safety and comfort at sea. Decades of racing and cruising experience inform hull forms and rig plans that make the boats rewarding to sail yet accessible to a wide range of owners. Design is treated as a tool for efficiency as much as aesthetics, with careful attention paid to weight distribution, ergonomics and circulation so that every square metre becomes usable, enjoyable living space. This approach has made Fountaine Pajot a benchmark in the 40–80 foot multihull segment for both private owners and professional charter fleets.
Fountaine Pajot also distinguishes itself through its industrial know‑how. The shipyard was an early adopter and innovator in composite manufacturing techniques such as vacuum infusion and RTM injection for hulls, decks and structural bulkheads. These processes deliver strong, lightweight structures with consistent quality while significantly reducing emissions in the production phase. The boats are finished by skilled craftspeople – from cabinetmakers to electricians and composite specialists – who bring yacht‑level detailing to series‑built catamarans, blending industrial efficiency with a high standard of craftsmanship.
Environmental responsibility is now central to the group’s strategy. Through its Odyssea 2024 plan and its ODSeaLab innovation platform, Fountaine Pajot is working towards offering a fully ODSea+ hybrid or alternative‑energy version across 100% of its sailing catamaran and monohull fleet by 2030. Concrete milestones already achieved include the launch of Smart Electric propulsion systems, the Aura 51 as one of the first series cruising catamarans with electric drive, and the Samana 59 REXH2, presented as the world’s first hydrogen‑powered cruising catamaran. The group is actively researching bio‑sourced and recycled materials, embedded renewable‑energy management and eco‑navigation solutions to reduce the lifecycle footprint of its boats.
This long‑term plan is supported by three complementary initiatives: ODSeaLab, a collaborative innovation platform that brings together internal teams, suppliers, dealers and owners to co‑develop greener technologies; ODSeaLife, which focuses on supporting marine conservation projects and protecting fragile ocean ecosystems; and ODSeaPeople, which places people and user experience at the heart of the company’s CSR approach, from employees and partners to owners and charter guests. Across these programmes, Fountaine Pajot’s ambition is clear: to become the leading builder of comfortable, ocean‑capable cruising boats powered by cleaner, smarter energy.
Governance and continuity of vision are ensured by a board and executive team deeply rooted in the brand’s history. Still led by members of the founding family alongside experienced industry professionals, the group combines long‑term commitment with the capacity to invest in industrial development, new product lines and environmental innovation. Having integrated the iconic Dufour Yachts shipyard in 2018, Fountaine Pajot now represents one of Europe’s foremost pleasure‑boat manufacturing groups, with a strong local base in the La Rochelle area and a worldwide network of dealers and service partners.
With more than 4,000 Fountaine Pajot catamarans and 17,000 Dufour yachts sailing worldwide, the brand embodies over half a century of passion, ingenuity and ambition. Its multihulls offer a distinctive blend of performance, space and contemporary design, while its clear course towards hybrid, electric and hydrogen propulsion positions Fountaine Pajot at the forefront of the next generation of sustainable cruising.
