The story of Selene
Selene Ocean Yachts is a distinguished yacht manufacturer established in 1998, specializing in luxury long-range trawlers and explorer yachts. The brand quickly rose to prominence as a leader in this niche, delivering handcrafted, semi-custom vessels designed for safety, luxury, and extended ocean passages. Founded by Howard Chen, who brings a unique blend of naval architecture and architectural expertise, Selene Yachts emphasizes quality craftsmanship backed by over 400 yachts built and sailing worldwide.
The name "Selene" honors the Greek goddess of the moon, inspired by a memorial designed by Taiwanese architect Dr. Da-Hong Wang commemorating the Apollo 11 moon landing, symbolizing the spirit of exploration that defines the brand. Initially based in Taiwan and with shipyards in Dongguan and Zhuhai, China, Selene Yachts benefits from highly skilled labor and superior materials availability, creating luxurious interiors from high-quality woods, veneers, and fabrics. The company consolidated its manufacturing in Zhuhai in 2018, operating one of Asia's largest and best-equipped shipyards for fiberglass yacht construction with a capacity to build up to 100 yachts annually.
Selene yachts are renowned for their robust construction and design focused on ocean-going capability, including strong hulls with watertight bulkheads, full skeg protection for propellers and rudders, and high-class engineered systems. The yachts feature full-displacement hulls for fuel-efficient cruising at speeds between 7 to 12 knots. Safety and comfort are paramount, with features like Portuguese bridges, high bulwarks, expansive storage, escape hatches, and high-grade stainless-steel fittings.
