Fresh off the drawing board of the renowned Stephens Waring Yacht Design in 2024, WISP is a fresh take on a gentleman's/woman's daysailer. WISP continues the legacy of the SWYD Spirit of Tradition (SoT) yachts, where classic design meets contemporary innovation and performance. Constructed by Artisan Boatworks in Rockport, ME, WISP incorporates clever, modern design and engineering solutions to ensure a swift and efficient yacht wrapped in a traditionally beautiful veneer. A gracefully balanced hull reminiscent of mid-20th-century cruiser-racers along with elegant overhangs that echo historic classic yachts will have you turning heads in every harbor.
The owner's prerogative and design demand was for impressive light-air performance as well as a weekender-capable interior. The performance is impressive and surprising, especially in lighter air where her slippery lines and efficient rig shine. The cockpit is cleverly designed with modern sail-handling equipment to allow for true singlehanded sailing, with all controls easily accessible from a sitting position behind the helm. This is true even for the downwind gennaker.
What stands out is the inviting interior with standing headroom and enough space and comfort systems that weekending onboard is comfortable—this is rare in a 39 ft sailing yacht with classic lines such as this, which often feel much smaller inside than their LOA would suggest. The build quality is exactly what one might expect from a small, pedigreed artisan boatbuilder in Maine.
The hull is a cold-molded wood-epoxy composite featuring Western Red Cedar planking with E-glass and epoxy skin, with Douglas Fir structural frames. The deck is premium laid teak over a foam-core composite sandwich, reinforced with wood and E-glass for optimal structural rigidity. The superstructure is marine plywood encapsulated with E-glass, and bulkheads are structural Okoume marine plywood. Floor timbers are integrated with laminated frames crafted from Mahogany and Douglas Fir.
A dedicated forward hull tunnel houses a Sleipner 24V bow thruster for effortless close-quarters maneuvering. The cockpit features a sophisticated dual-purpose layout splitting guest and sailing zones. The forward guest lounging area is a clutter-free zone featuring plush upholstered seating surrounding a custom drop-leaf table with hidden storage for wine coolers and glasses. The aft sailing cockpit isolates all sailing controls, sheets, and lines safely away from guests.
The rig is a Solent configuration featuring a working jib and a large, multi-purpose reaching sail on fixed furlers. The mast is a Moore Brothers two-spreader carbon fiber mast with Nitronic rod standing rigging. The carbon fiber furling boom is equipped with an integrated jibe-preventer line and an electro-hydraulic vang system.
The mainsheet system features an under-deck trim system with an automated, two-speed 1:3 reverse-purchase hydraulic cylinder for rapid fine-tuning under load. Oversized Harken electric winches are driven by push-button controls at the helm. The jib features Furlex electric through-deck furling gear, and the asymmetric reaching sail uses Furlex stemhead-mounted furling gear.
The anchor system features a hidden, gas-spring assisted stow-away/swing-out anchor launcher that keeps the anchor and chain completely below deck inside the forward locker to preserve the classic bow profile. An electric windlass is mounted below decks. Ambient soft LED lighting is integrated throughout the cockpit.
The interior offers rare standing headroom in both the galley and the private head. Accommodations include a spacious queen-size forward berth for two guests, with saloon seating that comfortably accommodates four guests.
The galley features a single-burner induction cooktop, microwave oven, and Keurig coffee machine. A 103-liter custom-fabricated stainless steel refrigerator/freezer combo is insulated with 50mm polyurethane foam, powered by a Sea Frost BD-XP compressor with an AEO air-cooled system. The private head compartment features a Tecma Silent Plus 2 Short 24V DC fresh-water plumbed electric marine toilet. An overhead hot-water shower system is included.
The primary engine is a Yammer 3JH40 with Yammer SD60 Saildrive. Engine throttle is a Kobelt 2042 single-lever stainless steel control. Dual 24V high-output alternators supply power. A Fireboy #MA-2-400-227 manual/automatic total flooding clean agent fire extinguisher system includes a manual pull cord in the cockpit.
Fresh water systems include a KUUMA 6-gallon stainless steel water heater powered via 120 VAC or engine heat exchanger loop, and a Headhunter XR124 24V DC pressurized fresh water pump. Black water discharge is managed via a Sealand T24 pump from the holding tank to an overboard discharge thru-hull valve. A Whale Gray Water Sump Pump and waste tank with intelligent controls handles gray water. Bilge systems include two Jabsco 24V electric bilge pumps plus one high-capacity Rule 2000 GPH 24V centrifugal bilge pump. Thru-hulls and seacocks are Forespar Marelon glass-reinforced plastic valves.
AC Electrical Power (120V): Shore power connection features 30 Amp service with a 50 ft shore power cord. A Victron MultiPlus 24/3000/70 serves as the inverter/charger (3000 watts inverter, 70 amp battery charger). A Victron VDI-32 galvanic isolator is installed. The AC/DC panel is located outboard of the port settee with magnetic circuit breakers, digital volt/amp meters, frequency indicators, and a source selector switch. Standard 3-prong 120V double receptacles are fully protected by upstream GFCI receptacles.
DC Electrical Power (24V / 12V): The house battery bank consists of Victron Lithium-Ion 24V Smart LFP batteries totaling 400 Ah (two 200 Ah units), with a dedicated AGM start battery bank. A Victron Color Control GX digital monitor tracks system performance. A 24V DC to 12V DC 60 Amp converter supplies stable power to onboard marine electronics. Individual bank switches with an emergency crossover switch link the engine bank and DC-DC converter.
Navigation and electronics include a Garmin GPSMap 8610 touchscreen multifunction display, Garmin GMR 18 HD radar with mast-mounted radome, and a Jefa 200nM autopilot system with electronic control display at the helm. A Garmin VHF 215 radio at the helm is paired with a masthead antenna. A Garmin anemometer and wind indicator with masthead wand provide wind data. Ultrasonic depth sounder and speed transducers are installed. A Fusion Radio/MP3/CD player drives two speakers in the saloon and two waterproof speakers in the cockpit. A public address hailer horn is mounted below the radar dome on the mast.
Sails are supplied by North Sails using high-performance membrane sail technology. The fully battened membrane mainsail is custom-optimized for the carbon furling boom. The working jib features furling with sheets led directly to winches controlled by ergonomic foot buttons at the helm for effortless singlehanded tacking. An asymmetric flying reacher is attached to a stemhead-mounted furling drum and can remain aloft while furled during upwind tacks, easily deployed or furled directly from the helm.
