The story of Horizon Boats

Horizon Boats is a leading Australian builder of aluminium trailer boats, renowned for dependable performance, family friendliness and strong value for money across a wide range of on‑water activities.

Established in 1992 by Bob and Christine James, the company begins as a small operation in a shed at Burleigh on Queensland’s Gold Coast, producing just a couple of tinny models. Drawing on Bob James’ more than 45 years of marine industry experience – from skippering yachts and working with prominent boat manufacturers to winning powerboat championships – Horizon steadily evolves into a respected national brand. Today it offers around 84 different models and produces approximately 1,500 boats annually, serving recreational, commercial and survey markets.

Horizon specialises in Australian made aluminium boats, building everything from simple punts and dinghies through to side and centre consoles, runabouts, bow riders, cabin and centre cabin models. Its line-up is grouped into dedicated ranges such as HP Hull open boats, Hydro Lift pressed boats, GRIDcore plate boats and purpose-built survey and commercial craft, giving buyers options that suit estuary fishing, family cruising and serious offshore or workboat applications.

The company’s mission, "Building Family Dreams Today", underpins its design and manufacturing philosophy. Horizon focuses on applying high standards in every stage of production to deliver durable, easy‑to‑own boats that provide years of enjoyment. As a family owned and operated business with two generations involved, it places strong emphasis on reliability, safety and practical layouts that suit Australian boating conditions and a wide variety of engines.

Continuous research and development is a core part of Horizon’s identity. The team regularly releases new models and refines production techniques to remain at the forefront of trailer boat design and to ensure compatibility with all major outboard brands. This commitment has led to exclusive contracts and industry recognition, including building dedicated ranges for Mercury Marine, supplying Queensland State Emergency Service response boats, and earning Modern Boating’s 2008 "Family Boat of the Year" award for the 540 SeaBreeze bow rider. All of these boats are designed and developed at Horizon’s Gold Coast manufacturing facility.
