About this vessel
NORTH STAR is a Bristol Yachts sailboat built to a classic Ted Hood design. She has a shoal-draft, centerboard hull with a heavier displacement build, giving her strong upwind performance, a comfortable motion at sea, and generous interior volume for her size. With the centerboard up, NORTH STAR draws just 4'11", allowing access to shallow anchorages. With the board down, draft increases to 11' for improved upwind sailing performance.
She is powered by a Westerbeke 70 hp diesel engine, completely overhauled by Hansen Marine in 2013 (approximately 500 hours since the factory rebuild, 1,862 total hours). A Northern Lights 10 kW generator with only 633 hours provides auxiliary power.
NORTH STAR sleeps four in two private staterooms (forward V-berth and aft centerline queen), plus an additional 2–4 guests in the main salon settees, which convert to double berths. The accommodations feature satin-finished teak louvered doors and locker fronts throughout, with a varnished teak-and-holly cabin sole. Numerous hatches and opening stainless portholes provide light and ventilation.
The forward stateroom includes a large V-berth convertible to a double with center seat/filler cushion, two hanging lockers, twin bureaus, and extensive storage, with en-suite access to the forward head. The main salon has a starboard settee extending to a double berth and a port L-shaped settee that also converts to a double, along with a drop-leaf table that seats six when fully opened.
The galley is U-shaped, aft to starboard near the companionway, and features a Shipmate 3-burner propane stove/oven with solenoid safety valve, a GE microwave/toaster oven, Sea Frost 12V refrigeration with top- and front-loading units plus a separate large freezer compartment, twin deep stainless sinks, pressure hot/cold water, a water filter, and manual fresh/saltwater pumps.
The master stateroom aft features a centerline queen berth with lee cloths, accessible from both sides, a large forward-port hanging locker, multiple drawers, three opening portholes, and a large deck hatch. The aft head includes a Jabsco electric toilet, vanity, porcelain sink, tile floor, and separate shower stall with two opening portholes.
She is equipped with a Hood Stoway electric furling mast, a Schaefer 3100 furling genoa, and a Schaefer 2100 furling staysail, along with a full inventory of Hood storm and cruising sails. All winches were rebuilt in 2024 and include two Barient #36 ST electric primaries, two Barient #32 ST secondaries, two Barient #28 ST mainsheet/outhaul, two Lewmar #48 ST halyard winches on the mast, one Barient #22 mast winch, and one centerboard hoist winch.
Electronics include a Raymarine C90 radar/chartplotter, a Garmin 541 mini GPS/chartplotter, Raymarine SeaTalk-networked sailing instruments with 4 cockpit displays plus 1 nav station display, an Autohelm 6000 autopilot, ICOM M-504 VHF with cockpit handset, ICOM M-802 SSB, passive AIS, and a Globalstar satellite phone.
The hull is hand-laid solid fiberglass finished in Midnight Blue Awlgrip with white double boot stripes, a gold cove stripe, and green bottom. The deck is hand-laid fiberglass with end-grain balsa core, white with light tan non-skid and a rub rail with stainless striker. In 2018, the hull, topsides, and cockpit were repainted, the non-skid redone, new hatches installed, and all deck hardware removed and re-bedded. All seacocks were removed, reconditioned, and re-bedded.
Major upgrades completed in 2025 at Portland Yacht Services included a new Cruise RO 30 gph watermaker (tested, never used), new reverse-cycle AC/heat, new refrigerator and freezer cold plates, new hot and cold domestic water lines, new galley and head faucets, a new drive shaft and seal, a new 140-amp alternator, a new mainsail, and reconditioned/repainted mast, boom, and rigging, plus new halyards, topping lift, LED lights, and clutches. She has been professionally stored and maintained by Portland Yacht Services for the past two years, and by Jamestown Boat Yard in Jamestown, RI for the ten years prior.
Additional equipment includes an Ideal 12V anchor windlass with chain gypsy, a Bruce 60 lb anchor with 250' chain rode and a CQR 45 lb anchor with chain rode, stainless bow/midship/quarter chocks and cleats, stainless stanchions and lifelines with boarding gates, a stern gate with fold-down stainless swim ladder and teak treads, a dodger with heavy-gauge clear panels, a bimini top, varnished teak trim and toe rail with a cockpit table, an 8' Hypalon RIB inflatable dinghy with Honda 9.9 hp outboard, bracket, and stainless hoist davit, and comprehensive safety gear including multiple fire extinguishers, life jackets, horseshoe life ring, radar reflector, flare kit, drogue, jacklines, fog bell, and offshore medical kit.
