About NORTH STAR
NORTH STAR is a Bristol Yachts sailboat built to a classic Ted Hood design. She has a shoal-draft, centerboard hull with a heavier displacement build, giving her strong upwind performance, a comfortable motion at sea, and generous interior volume for her size. With the centerboard up, NORTH STAR draws just 4'11", allowing access to shallow anchorages. With the board down, draft increases to 11' for improved upwind sailing performance.
She sleeps four in two private staterooms (forward V-berth and aft centerline queen), plus an additional 2-4 guests in the main salon settees, which convert to double berths.
Hull and Deck
Hand-laid solid fiberglass hull with hand-laid fiberglass deck featuring an end-grain balsa core. The hull is finished in Midnight Blue Awlgrip with white double boot stripes, gold cove stripe, and green bottom. The deck is white with light tan non-skid and features a rub rail with stainless striker.
In 2018, the hull, topsides, and cockpit were repainted; non-skid was redone; new hatches were installed; and all deck hardware was removed and re-bedded. All seacocks were removed, reconditioned, and re-bedded.
Accommodations and Layout
Satin-finished teak louvered doors and locker fronts throughout, with a varnished teak-and-holly cabin sole. Numerous hatches and opening stainless portholes provide light and ventilation.
The forward stateroom features a large V-berth (new mattress, 2024) convertible to a double with center seat/filler cushion, two hanging lockers, twin bureaus, and extensive storage. It has en-suite access to the forward head, which is also accessible from the main salon.
The main salon features a starboard settee that extends to a double berth and a port L-shaped settee that also converts to a double with a starboard lee cloth. A drop-leaf table seats six when fully opened. The salon includes a new 12V top-loading freezer with Sea Frost cold plate (2025), new pullout bunk cushions (2024), and a new Dometic AC/heat reverse-cycle unit (2025).
The galley is U-shaped and aft to starboard, near the companionway. It features a Shipmate 3-burner propane stove/oven with solenoid safety valve, a GE microwave/toaster oven, Sea Frost 12V refrigeration (top- and front-loading) plus a separate large freezer compartment, twin deep stainless sinks, pressure hot/cold water, a water filter, and manual fresh/saltwater pumps.
The navigation station is forward-facing to port, with a large chart table, storage, multiple drawers, and flush-mounted electronics. Engine and generator access doors are located opposite.
The master stateroom aft features a centerline queen berth (new mattress, 2024) with lee cloths, accessible from both sides, a large forward-port hanging locker plus multiple drawers, three opening portholes, and a large deck hatch (replaced 2020). It has a new reverse-cycle AC/heat unit (2025).
The master head is aft to starboard, featuring a Jabsco electric toilet, vanity, porcelain sink, tile floor, separate shower stall, and two opening portholes.
Engine and Mechanical
She is powered by a Westerbeke 70 hp diesel engine, completely overhauled by Hansen Marine in 2013 (approximately 500 hours since the factory rebuild, 1,862 total hours). A Northern Lights 10 kW generator with only 633 hours provides auxiliary power.
The engine features soft mounts with CV joint and thrust bearing, overheat and oil pressure alarms, and Racor fuel filters for both engine and generator. A fixed 3-blade prop is fitted.
Recent 2025 refit work at Portland Yacht Services included a new drive shaft and seal, a new 140-amp alternator, and a Raritan hot water heater. A Cruise RO 30 gph 120V watermaker (new 2025, tested, never used) provides fresh water generation. Automatic electric bilge pumps complement two manual bilge pumps and one 110V emergency bilge pump. Jabsco electric toilets with holding tank, bypass, and macerator pump-out are installed.
Sails and Rigging
NORTH STAR is equipped with a Hood Stoway electric furling mast, sized for ICW mast clearance. The rig includes a Navtec hydraulic backstay adjuster (rebuilt 2025), Forespar rigid boom vang, and mainsheet traveler.
Sails include a Northsail furling mainsail with vertical battens (2025, never used), 130% furling genoa (2015), Hood furling staysail, Hood storm jib, Hood storm trysail, and Hood asymmetrical cruising spinnaker.
All winches were rebuilt in 2024: 2x Barient #36 ST electric primaries, 2x Barient #32 ST secondaries, 2x Barient #28 ST mainsheet/outhauls, 2x Lewmar #48 ST halyards (on mast), 1x Barient #22 mast winch, and 1x centerboard hoist winch.
Recent rigging work at Portland Yacht Services in 2025 included mast, boom, and rigging reconditioned and repainted, plus new halyards, topping lift, LED lights, and clutches.
Electronics and Navigation
NORTH STAR includes a Raymarine C90 radar/chartplotter (nav station, cockpit-mountable), a Garmin 541 mini GPS/chartplotter (2013) at the pedestal, Raymarine SeaTalk-networked sailing instruments (4 cockpit displays plus 1 nav station display), an Autohelm 6000 autopilot, ICOM M-504 VHF with cockpit handset (2013), ICOM M-802 SSB, passive AIS, and a Globalstar satellite phone. Additional equipment includes a stereo/CD player with multiple speakers, and a Weems and Plath clock and barometer.
Electrical System
The boat features 12V DC / 110V AC systems with a breaker panel opposite the nav station. Four house/engine/generator batteries are installed, along with twin engine alternators (55A and 140A, with the 140A new in 2025). A Xantrex battery charger/inverter with remote panels is fitted, and 30A and 50A shore power inlets with matching shore cables are provided. A new masthead tri-color/strobe was installed in 2025.
Additional Equipment
An Ideal 12V anchor windlass with chain gypsy was installed in 2018. The ground tackle includes a Bruce 60 lb anchor with 250' chain rode and a CQR 45 lb anchor with chain rode. Stainless bow/midship/quarter chocks and cleats, stanchions, lifelines, and boarding gates are fitted. A stern gate with fold-down stainless swim ladder and teak treads is installed.
The boat features a dodger with heavy-gauge clear panels and a bimini top. Varnished teak trim, toe rail, and cockpit table are throughout. An 8' Hypalon RIB inflatable dinghy with Honda 9.9 hp outboard, bracket, and stainless hoist davit is included.
Safety gear includes multiple fire extinguishers, 6 Type I life jackets, horseshoe life ring, radar reflector, flare kit, drogue, jacklines, fog bell, and an offshore medical kit.
Maintenance History
NORTH STAR has been professionally stored and maintained by Portland Yacht Services for the past two years, and by Jamestown Boat Yard in Jamestown, RI for the ten years prior.
