About this vessel
FLYER is a 47-foot Baltec Visiona Performance Cruising Catamaran, a proven bluewater performance catamaran designed to combine offshore capability, speed, comfort, and exceptional living space. Built by Baltec using the original SP Systems composite construction method, she was engineered as a lightweight, stiff, and capable cruising platform in accordance with German Lloyd and CE standards.
Only a limited number of Visiona catamarans were built, and several have completed extensive world cruising and full circumnavigations. FLYER has an impressive offshore history of her own. Launched in 2000, she crossed the North Sea on her way to the Azores and ended up crossing the Atlantic to home port in the U.S. Virgin Isles. The owners who ordered the build sold the boat to a couple of Australians who cruised the boat through the Lesser Antilles down into Central America and back up again seasonally.
The current owners purchased the boat in 2005 and took her back down the Caribbean chain a couple times, home porting her in the BVI's and storing her on the hard when they weren't with her. In 2007 they decided to bring her back to the Bay Area and moved the boat from the BVI's through the Gulf of Mexico into the Panama Canal and up the Eastern Pacific to California. FLYER has never transited on the deck of a ship. Thousands of ocean miles and a vast area of conditions were accomplished on her own bottom.
Since acquiring FLYER in 2005, her owners have continually maintained, improved, and upgraded her. Recent work includes a complete exterior Awlgrip finish, rebuilt saildrives, updated Raymarine instrumentation, new house and starting batteries, new water heaters, renewed plumbing fixtures, upgraded canvas, and numerous mechanical and cosmetic improvements.
Design and Construction
The Visiona was conceived as a lightweight performance catamaran with the strength and structural stiffness required for extended offshore cruising. Her approximately 24'7" beam provides excellent stability, expansive deck space, and comfortable upright sailing without the heel associated with a monohull.
With approximately 160 square meters of usable living and deck area, FLYER provides generous space for owners and guests. There are ample areas for relaxing in the sun as well as protected spaces beneath the covered cockpit. The cockpit is finished with teak decking, while the interior features light maple joinery that creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. Her wide stance and balanced hull design contribute to a quiet, stable ride both underway and at anchor. With a draft of approximately 3'11", FLYER can access anchorages, snorkeling areas, and cruising grounds that are unavailable to many larger vessels.
Accommodations and Interior
FLYER offers an unusually spacious interior for a performance-oriented cruising catamaran. Approximately 6'6" of headroom in the main salon and 6'3" of headroom within the hulls create a comfortable environment throughout the vessel.
Light maple interior joinery and large salon windows provide a bright, open atmosphere. Interior surfaces below deck have been revarnished, and the main salon has been repainted. Additional interior improvements include two televisions, with one in the main salon and one in the owner's stateroom; two electric Sealand marine toilets; renovated and replaced shower systems; new faucets throughout the galley, heads, and showers; two new 12-gallon water heaters; refinished interior wood surfaces; and renewed forepeak coatings and sealing. The electric toilets are mounted directly above the holding tanks. The holding tanks can be discharged offshore where permitted or emptied through deck pump-out fittings.
Galley
The galley is equipped for extended cruising and comfortable onboard living, featuring a propane stove with oven, separate refrigerator, large separate freezer, pressure freshwater system, accumulator tanks, integral freshwater tanks, quality sinks and plumbing fixtures, two 12-gallon hot-water tanks, and a renovated propane system.
Sailing Performance
FLYER was designed to offer rewarding sailing performance while retaining the comfort and carrying capacity required for long-distance cruising. All original sails have been replaced with sails manufactured by Doyle Sails of Richmond, California. The running rigging, traveler, blocks, deck tracks, turning blocks, and winches are substantially sized to safely manage the considerable loads generated by the powerful rig. The oversized sail-handling equipment allows the sails to be controlled and trimmed efficiently with reduced physical effort.
Major standing-rigging turnbuckles for the port and starboard shrouds have also been replaced.
Machinery
FLYER is powered by twin 40-hp Volvo diesel engines, replacing the original 20-hp engines. The engines are paired with saildrives and three-blade folding propellers. Recent engine service and improvements include engine overhaul and comprehensive servicing, new hoses, new belts, new fuel lines, fuel testing, engine-oil testing, rebuilt saildrives, and new saildrive boots installed in 2025. Two independent engine-starting batteries were installed in 2023. The twin-engine arrangement provides excellent maneuverability, redundancy, and dependable propulsion for offshore cruising.
Electrical System
FLYER's original European electrical system was converted for United States operation in 2005. The vessel has since received extensive electrical upgrades and carries both 12-volt DC and 110-volt AC systems. Electrical equipment and improvements include complete conversion from European to U.S. electrical service, large electrical distribution panel, shore-power connection, battery charger, marine inverter, battery-monitoring system, fuel-level gauges, six sealed deep-cycle house batteries installed in 2023, two independent engine-starting batteries installed in 2023, a portable generator added in 2024, and upgraded lighting and onboard instrumentation.
Navigation and Electronics
FLYER carries an extensive Raymarine electronics package. Instruments have been renewed, serviced, or replaced as necessary, including Raymarine depth display, wind display, autopilot, remote steering control, a new Raymarine-compatible masthead wind transducer installed in 2024, and renovated Raymarine displays and associated equipment.
Ground Tackle
FLYER is equipped with an electric anchor windlass, approximately 160 feet of stainless-steel anchor chain, and substantially constructed deck hardware.
Water Systems
FLYER is equipped for extended periods away from shore facilities. Equipment includes approximately 200 gallons of freshwater capacity, two integral 100-gallon freshwater tanks (one in each hull), a Spectra watermaker, two 12-gallon water heaters, pressure freshwater pumps, accumulator tanks, new faucets throughout the vessel, and renovated shower systems.
Tender and Water Access
Wide stern platforms and an extended swim ladder provide convenient access to and from the water. This arrangement is ideal for swimming, snorkeling, diving, and boarding the tender. FLYER includes a 12-foot rigid inflatable tender with a 2024 Mercury 20-hp outboard, a permanently installed Bauer dive compressor for filling scuba tanks, wide swim platforms, and an extended boarding ladder.
