This custom-built Chinese lug rigged schooner, named Hai Shi (Sea Lion), is a one-of-a-kind vessel built by ORCA Manufacturing and Trading P/L. Launched prior to completion in January 2002, the design is a modified and developed version of L Francis Herreshoff plan number 107, the same line drawings used to develop the Freedom 40 and Revolution 36.
The hull is strip planked in Western Red Cedar (22 × 22 mm), epoxy glued and edge fastened, with a laminated Douglas Fir keel and stem. It is sheathed inside and out with three layers of 751 gram M2 Triaxial E Glass set in epoxy, giving a total laminate weight of 2,253 grams M2. Survey-required ribs at 450 mm centres are glassed over with 3000 grams Biaxial E Glass set in epoxy. The treated steel box section keel runs the full length and is weighted with 2550 kg of lead poured in by foundry. Interior fit-out is plywood epoxy glassed with bulkheads panelled in Deodar Cedar and teak trim hand crafted throughout. The coach house is plywood glassed over with epoxy fairing.
Both masts are free standing in tabernacles, constructed as hollow section tapered tubes using the Nobel Method with E Glass sheath set in epoxy. The fully battened tan sails were made in Hong Kong, with a main sail area of 34.22 m² and foresail area of 16.22 m², totalling 50.44 m².
Accommodation comprises five berths. The interior features two saloon seating/berths with a table, a removable pipe cot berth over the starboard settee, a galley with twin sinks, methylated spirits stove, and portable gas single burner for cockpit use. A full-size chart table is located on the starboard side. The forward cabin has a large double berth with seating on both sides. Fresh water is held in ten litre containers totalling 240 litres, with additional built-in tankage beneath the saloon sole of approximately 200 litres (not currently used). There is minimal electric lighting, supplemented by solar lights and an oil lamp. Solar vent fans serve the head and saloon, and inbuilt dorade vents supply fresh air to the main cabin.
Twin reconditioned Volvo Diesel 2003 series 28 hp engines are raw water cooled with Volvo three-blade counter-rotating propellers shaft driven through a Duramax shaft seal system. Diesel fuel capacity is approximately 455 litres across port and starboard tanks (note: port engine feeds from starboard tank and starboard engine feeds from port tank, allowing for motor sailing capability). An additional 18-litre tank in each engine compartment provides inter-connected supply. The head features an electric toilet with hand basin and shower facility. Steering is hydraulic with a midship-type wheel and an emergency tiller fitted to the rudder shaft.
The vessel is currently due for slipping and anti-foul bottom paint. New through-hull sea cocks for engine cooling are recommended and fittings will be supplied. Offered for sale as-is to allow the prospective buyer to ascertain vessel condition and refit to personal requirements.
