The Beneteau Oceanis 340 is a capable and well-balanced cruising yacht, offering an appealing combination of sailing performance, easy handling and comfortable accommodation. NIRVANA is a great example of a design that delivers both enjoyable sailing and practical cruising features.
Under sail, the Oceanis 340 points well to windward and delivers good speed. Under power, her manoeuvrability is equally impressive, making her easy to handle in crowded harbours and busy marinas. With a balanced spade rudder, she turns readily and tracks well when reversing, inspiring confidence in close-quarters situations. The rigging was replaced in 2021.
Her solid feel under sail and power is supported by robust construction, including an integral fibreglass grid and hull liner bonded to a solid fibreglass hull, bulkheads bonded through 360 degrees to the hull and deck, and a resin-infused end-grain balsa-cored deck. The fibreglass rudder, stainless-steel stock and Goïot cable-and-quadrant steering provide responsive handling, while the B&G autopilot operates quietly and efficiently. The Yanmar engine is immaculate, with an incredibly low 700 hours on the display, and has just been serviced in November 2026 and is ready to go.
On deck, the Oceanis 340 has been thoughtfully laid out for ease of movement and safety. Wide side decks, non-slip surfaces, teak toerails and teak handrails extending forward to the mast provide secure footing when moving around the yacht underway. Access from the cockpit is straightforward, making life on deck comfortable and practical for both cruising and day sailing.
The spacious cockpit features wraparound seating, offering plenty of room for relaxing or entertaining. The helm position provides good visibility, with the option to sit to either side of the wheel for sail trimming or directly behind it to monitor the chartplotter and instruments mounted on the steering pedestal. The angled deckhouse bulkhead also provides a comfortable backrest for crew.
Storage is another strong feature. The centre section of the aft cockpit seat lifts to provide easy access to the swim platform, while the port aft seat lifts to reveal the gas bottle and additional storage, with room for items such as a life raft or fenders. The large starboard cockpit locker offers generous space for cruising equipment and water toys, and would accommodate an inflatable dinghy plus outboard.
A cabin-top winch positioned to port of the companionway handles the halyards and other sail-control lines, keeping the cockpit uncluttered. The companionway hatch is also cleverly designed, allowing the drop boards to slide up and stow beneath the sliding hatch when not required. This arrangement provides flexibility, allowing ventilation while retaining protection in unsettled weather.
Below deck, the interior, designed by Nauta Design, feels remarkably spacious for a yacht of this size. The wide beam carried well aft creates a generous living area, complemented by warm Alpi woodwork, light upholstery and an abundance of natural light and ventilation through the ports and hatches.
The saloon is particularly inviting, with long, comfortable settees that can double as sea berths when fitted with lee cloths. The folding leaves of the saloon table provide flexible dining space for up to five or six people, making the area well suited to entertaining or relaxing after a day under sail.
The practical galley is located on the port side and features a two-burner stove and oven, an aft-opening refrigerator with integrated small freezer and a double stainless sink positioned close to the centreline.
The head (electric with holding tank) is conveniently located to starboard of the companionway and benefits from a durable gelcoat finish, along with several ports providing natural light and ventilation.
The aft cabin offers a generously sized athwartships double berth, a hanging locker and additional storage. Opening ports, including one in the transom, assist with airflow and ventilation. There is also convenient access to the side of the engine.
Forward, the private cabin features a good-sized V-berth, a hanging locker to starboard, shelves on either side and additional lockers to port, providing practical storage for extended stays aboard.
NIRVANA offers a well-considered balance of sailing performance, ease of handling and comfortable accommodation. With her responsive sailing characteristics, practical deck layout and surprisingly spacious interior, the Beneteau Oceanis 340 is an appealing choice for coastal cruising, weekends away or longer adventures.
Rigging age: 2021. Date of last antifoul: November 2025.
