About this vessel

Welcome aboard The Devil's Gauntlet, a truly one of a kind, historic and iconic motorsailer that was built in Pillar Point, California. Her build was supported with extensive help and shared knowledge from the Philip & Son Shipyard (Dartmouth, England). The Devil's Gauntlet is an exact, full size replica of the Brigantine "Sultana" (1768), a Royal British Navy ship that was built to protect the Massachusetts coast from piracy, prevent smuggling, and collect customs duties.

The Devil's Gauntlet boasts 2 wooden masts, a bow pulpit, with the wheel and upper rudder post aft of the raised companionway. She has a forward sloping aft deck with a boom gallows just aft of the wheel station. A seven rung wooden ladder leads down the companion way into the main salon which has a full wet bar with a sink and serving counter. There is a U-shaped settee with a granite counter top end table and mirrored cabinet above. Her centered passage leads forward down two steps where on the starboard side is the main AC panel box, the guest head, and the aft and forward guest state rooms. On the port side is access to the fuel filters, the U-shaped galley, and the aft and forward guest state rooms. A wooden swing door leads from the port forward state room to the V cabin, which is currently used as a tool and spare equipment room. Aft is the master state room with its own on suite head.

Her hull is constructed from Kevlar/Polymer composite which is known to provide unparalleled strength, performance, and able to stand the test of time. Kevlar/Polymer hulls greatly reduce many issues that come from traditional fiberglass construction and they are still widely preferred and used by many reputable boat building shipyards throughout the world.

The Devil's Gauntlet has been completely refit (2019-2022) by her current owner to be a fully functional, blue water, motorsailer with all the creature comforts and amenities. She can sleep 14 guests between 5 staterooms.

The rudder is 22 feet in length, constructed of solid mahogany, bronze-fastened and glue-laminated, and encased in fiberglass for longevity. All wooden components including the mast, yards, booms, bowsprit, and flagpoles are constructed from new Oregon White Pine. Deadeyes, belaying pins, racks, and hatches are crafted from new African Mahogany.

The standing rigging is galvanized steel, coated in black Flex Seal for aesthetic and protective purposes. The running rigging features New England ropes synthetic Manila. Ratlines are spun Dacron, dipped in tar-based product for durability and traditional appearance. The sails and rigging are all intact and in excellent condition.

All metal parts are hand-made and fully galvanized with zero rust. Block and tackle are manufactured in Norway with Norwegian ash and Kevlar rollers, 880 stainless steel pins, and solid brass fasteners rated for 50 years with proper maintenance.
