CETACEA is a Cheoy Lee 53' Motorsailor, a classic motorsailor designed by Seaton-Neville and built to be a rugged bluewater capable boat, best known for its heavy duty fiberglass construction, pilothouse layout and twin diesel engines for safety and reliability. She is a cutter-rigged boat for sailing versatility and spacious interior with multiple staterooms. CETACEA is a combination of power yacht comfort with flybridge and all weather pilothouse alongside long-range sailing capability, making it an ideal boat for extended cruising.
As one of the last sailboat hulls built in Hong Kong, and one of the last hulls in the CL53 series built, CETACEA benefited from all the improvements made to earlier CL53 hulls. The current owners of 24 years have continually maintained and improved her, and they continue to use her in the eastern Mediterranean.
A huge plus with CETACEA is the consideration that CETACEA exhausts the main engines at the stern as opposed to mid-ship, which stops the wrap-around effect of exhaust into the cabin, aft stateroom, pilothouse and cockpit.
As a proven long-distance cruiser, CETACEA has twin Perkins 4-236 engines (168 HP); 800 gallons of fuel; 500 gallons of water; 60 gallon holding tank; 3 cabins with A/C in all cabins; 2 electric heads with separate showers; a large main salon with seating for 6; a fully equipped galley designed for cooking underway; and an enclosed pilot house with an elevated full-size berth for comfortable night watches. The self-tailing hydraulic winches and mast and jib furling systems make sail handling easy for a couple to manage. There is an upper fly bridge with a 360-degree view for ease of anchoring and docking. With so many safety features and large spaces, CETACEA provides security and comfort to enjoy on extended passages with family and friends.
New equipment in 2023-2025 includes all new rigging; shafts and shaft seals; zincs; and cutlass bearings; Kohler generator; inverter; chart plotters; radar; antennas; AIS; VHF; hand-held VHFs; freezer; dinghy; Starlink; cleaned out both fuel tanks; and applied new antifouling paint.
The major custom upgrades on CETACEA include increased engine room ventilation for better engine performance; rerouted engine exhaust to exit aft of the cockpit; replaced the teak deck with non-skid for low maintenance and a cooler deck; redesigned and reinforced all safety rails with extended solid tube railing around the cockpit; replaced the doorway hatch with a full-sized waterproof door; installed a custom fiberglass table on the foredeck that doubles as the propane gas tank holder, a table for sundowners, and the dingy rest; installed fully enclosed cockpit canvass with Strataglass panels for surrounding views; installed a hard top system with solar panels, dimmable LED lights and hatches for air flow; installed Lithium-ion batteries along with an updated battery management system; redesigned the v-berth to provide a queen/king sized v-berth; and redesigned the master head shower with wrap-around side walls and non-skid floor pan. The extensive insulation and soundproofing provide for very quiet passages.
As the owners' cruising days are coming to a close, they are sad to list their beloved CETACEA for sale. But as they continue to enjoy sailing her around the Mediterranean, they are hoping to find just the right sailors to continue her legacy of adventure.
