The Southerly 49 RS is equipped with two wheels, two rudders, a skeg-protected propeller, and a sturdy grounding plate along with a variable-draft swing keel. The yacht can dry upright in tidal zones. The swing keel is a substantial, cast-iron hydrofoil, carefully shaped to provide excellent lift and minimise drag when lowered. It pivots on a robust stainless steel pin located at its leading edge. The swing keel retracts into a reinforced recess or trunk built into the hull, ensuring both strength and watertight integrity. A significant portion of the ballast (11,530 lbs) is incorporated into a fixed iron casting that forms a grounding plate at the bottom of the hull. The keel is raised and lowered using a hydraulic ram powered by an electric pump, with a manual pump for redundancy.
