Marmetta was designed by Philip L. Rhodes of New York City. She was built by the Blanchard Boat Company of Seattle, Washington, and is, to all intents and purposes, a larger edition of Rhodes 27. The layout and general profile are the same, but the extra two feet of waterline length have been used to obtain a slightly larger boat.
Marmetta is planked with Port Orford Cedar with Everdur fastenings, originally had Kordless standing rigging and Merriman hardware. Her motor was replaced in 1959 with a Mercedes OM 636 VI-E diesel engine mounted aft under the cockpit.
Accommodations consist of a two-berth stateroom with plenty of storage space forward, followed by a head to port and hanging lockers to starboard. Aft of this is the main cabin, which is equipped with a built-in berth with extension transom on the port side and a settee berth on the starboard side. A conveniently arranged galley is located aft to port, while a chart table and storage space are to starboard.
Recent refits and upgrades include 2026 house, decks and interior painting, varnish and finishes; 2024 bottom paint and recaulking; 2023 complete new electrical system with batteries and monitoring; 2021 topside paint; 2018 complete rigging replacement; 2013 topside sealing, recaulking, and engine bed work; and 2008 cabin top fiberglass replacement and resealing. A 2004 refurbishment included replacing soft planks, adding bronze straps to cracked frames, installing a new stove and fridge, adding radar and depth instruments, and installing new self-tending winches and automatic windlass.
