About this vessel
Some Place Else was first commissioned in 1977 from the newly created Kong & Halvorsen, founded by Mr Kong Hon Sing, the former General Manager of the American Marine Company of Grand Banks fame, and Harvey Halvorsen, heir to the famous Australian shipbuilding dynasty. Kong & Halvorsen picked up where Grand Banks had left off, building world-class trawler-type leisure yachts in Hong Kong, mainly for export to the North American and Australian markets. Some Place Else's mahogany hull was laid by Grand Banks, while the superstructure was later added by Kong & Halvorsen.
The Island Gypsy 44 is a beautifully designed 3 stateroom, semi-displacement, Philippine mahogany hull, twin diesel trawler that cruises at 10 knots with low fuel consumption. Methodically maintained by its successive owners, her Burma teak finishes, Philippine mahogany hull and top quality brass scantlings were meant to impress. After nearly fifty years of faithful service, the vessel offers many happy sailing years ahead.
Interior and exterior upholstery are in good condition. The master cabin aft features a double berth, desk and en suite bathroom with bath tub. Forward, there is a guest cabin with V-berth and a crew cabin with single berth. The guest bathroom includes a shower. The saloon features dining table with L-shaped sofas, a drinks cabinet, helm and galley. The raised aft deck cockpit provides a sitting area and access to the swimming platform and exterior shower, with Bimini cover on fixed stainless steel structure. The flybridge features a u-shaped sitting area, teak table, helm station with bi-directional back, and retractable Bimini.
Recent works include 2021 bow, port and starboard decking fibreglassed and Kiwi Grip; 2023 full flybridge repair and reconstruction with new decking and seating layout; 2023 all teak areas varnish removed and sealed; 2023 and 2025 Kiwi Grip applications on decks; 2023 main salon varnish removed and sealed; 2025 forward and aft cabins varnish removed and sealed. Both engines received full service in 2023. The starboard engine upper overhaul with new gasket occurred in 2026, and the generator received full service in 2025. Fuel tanks were inspected and cleaned in 2023, and water tank in 2024.
