The story of Castoldi Jet
Castoldi is unanimously considered the innovator of the waterjet propulsion system and the company that relaunched its worldwide popularity through the development of a totally new design — upending the prevailing view that waterjet units were inefficient and poorly manoeuvrable. Since the first research and development work began in 1962, Castoldi has remained at the leading edge with advanced concepts, making its waterjet units ever more efficient, long-lasting, self-contained, and easy to maintain.
In 1962, a small series of scaled waterjet units were produced and distributed along the Ticino river near the company's facility for continuous monitoring. In February 1969, the first mass-produced Castoldi waterjet unit — the Jet 05 — was exhibited at the Genova Boat Show. The following year, a Castoldi-powered runabout won the 400 km Pavia-Venezia motorboat race at an average speed of 58.5 knots, beating all traditional propeller-driven hulls. In 1974, Castoldi took first place in the Santa Margherita–Montecarlo–Santa Margherita offshore race, the first long-distance offshore race in history ever won by a boat using waterjet propulsion.
Through the 1980s and 1990s, Castoldi waterjet drives powered Italian Customs patrol boats, Navy landing craft, Coast Guard rescue vessels, and the Destriero support boat during its 1992 Atlantic Ocean world speed record crossing. In 1998, the first Jet Tender unit — the JT 18 PRO — was launched, becoming the precursor of the entire present range of superyacht tenders.
Today, more than 40,000 Castoldi waterjet units are operating worldwide. The company is certified to ISO 9001, and all waterjet models comply with major Classification Registers including ABS, BV, DNV, RINA, RMRS, and RRR. The Castoldi facility covers 18,000 m² in Albairate, Italy, including 8,000 m² of production sheds, a water basin for trials, and a helicopter landing surface.
