According to Juan, when the Ericsson campaign began, the strategy was to build 2 boats and sail them together for development. The first boat was needed as early as possible so it was designed as an evolution of ABN AMRO but without much R&D. In parallel, an extensive 17 months R&D campaign was launched that concluded in the designs of Ericsson 4, a real evolution and generation change. Ericsson 4 included features in the hull and appendages that ended up winning the VOR with a substantial performance difference.

With L4 there are only 3 other VO70 with the potential to win the Rolex Offshore Major Race.
