Overview
About this vessel
A rare demonstration of classic boatbuilding brought to life with contemporary materials and uncompromising craftsmanship.
Handcrafted by Barry Martin - master builder and founder of Assegai Marine - this boat was conceived and built for his personal use, free of compromise, fashion or commercial limitations.
The outcome is a vessel that reads as right in every aspect: perfectly proportioned, quietly elegant and built to endure. These are the unmistakable signs of true workmanship. After a career creating elite high-speed game-fishing boats, Barry turned his skills to a personal signature vessel. Gwendoline is that completed vision.
In a market crowded with mass-produced composite boats focused on margins, Gwendoline is distinct.
She is equally at home on Pittwater, the Broadwater, the D'Entrecasteaux Channel south of Hobart - or anywhere seaworthiness and classic lines are valued above trend. Built to last rather than to date.
Construction
Core: 20 mm cedar strip plank, epoxy-bonded. External laminate: two layers of 1150 gsm triaxial glass, doubled below the waterline with extra keel reinforcement. Internal laminate: four layers of 1800 gsm quadraxial glass, doubled into the keel. Laminate schedule and scantlings comparable with yachts in the 60 ft class. Using contemporary epoxy techniques and the expertise of the builder, this hull is engineered for longevity. Reproducing this standard of build today would conservatively cost at least three times as much.
