About
The story of Mclay Boats
McLay Boats is a New Zealand aluminium boat design and manufacturing company specialising in serious fishing and family recreation boats. Based in New Zealand and serving customers globally, the company has built a strong reputation for robust construction, offshore capability and long-term durability at a reasonable price.
The business is driven by a clear focus on safety, function and comfort. McLay’s philosophy is that a recreational and fishing boat must first get the basics right, which is why their boats are built solidly and engineered for demanding real-world conditions. Their range spans trailerable aluminium boats for a wide variety of uses, including dedicated fishing boats, family and multipurpose craft, open boats and larger hardtop cruisers suited to extended trips.
Founder and boat builder Steve McLay has been producing top-quality fishing boats for over two decades. Under his leadership, the company has developed an extensive range of exclusively designed models that cover a wide spectrum of boating needs. The lineup includes the Sportsman Series for versatile family and fishing use, the CrossXover Series combining stylish looks with pontoon-style safety via extensive closed-cell foam buoyancy, the Fortress Series of open boats known for stability and export success, Cruiser Hardtop models for serious offshore and extended trips, the Raptor amphibious hardtop, and a strong custom-build program.
McLay Boats emphasises world-class design and engineering, paying particular attention to what serious fishing and recreational boat owners want: quality, functionality and value for money. The company is known for not skimping on structure or material thickness; bottoms are typically 4 mm, 5 mm or 6 mm aluminium plate with fully welded tread-plate floors as standard on models from 4.61 m up to the 11.00 m Walk Round. They incorporate multiple sealed buoyancy chambers and, in some ranges, extensive closed-cell foam to meet or exceed relevant Australian and European standards and to provide a high level of safety and peace of mind.
Quality assurance is a core value. McLay maintains numerous in-house quality checks to ensure high workmanship standards, and the staff themselves are keen boaters who use and test the boats personally. New designs and refinements are trialled on the water to make sure performance in New Zealand’s often challenging conditions matches the design intent. This continuous improvement approach has led to boats that are recognised for their strong, soft-riding hulls, offshore handling, large cockpits and practical layouts tailored to fishing, diving and family recreation.
McLay Boats offers a comprehensive five-year hull warranty, underlining their confidence in the strength and durability of their products. The company supports its owners through a professional dealer network that understands the boats’ handling and performance characteristics and provides after-sales service and support in New Zealand and overseas markets. McLay’s boats are sold domestically and exported internationally, with some series—particularly the Fortress range—achieving strong sales in Australia, Europe and other Pacific markets.
Customisation is another key part of the McLay offering. The dedicated manufacturing team can design and build custom boats up to 11 metres long and 3.1 metres wide, including commercial or survey-standard craft. Customers and dealers are encouraged to provide input, and McLay can supply 3D design concepts before construction to ensure the boat meets specific requirements. The company can build to CE certification, Australian 2C Survey and New Zealand survey standards, and owners can further personalise their boats with custom graphics and tailored fit-out options.
Overall, McLay Boats is distinguished by its combination of robust New Zealand-built aluminium construction, safety-focused design, real-world performance, strong dealer backing and a willingness to customise. This has made the brand a popular choice among serious anglers and families looking for durable, capable and value-driven aluminium boats in New Zealand and around the world.
